I recently mentioned that I had sighted in the neighbor’s Savage 243. Today he came over to get it and brought his youngest daughter to shoot it. She’s about 12, and she is scared of noise, so I could see a possible problem teaching her to shoot. Started her off with the Tikka T1X at 25 yards, and she shot tiny groups. Went to my Ruger 223 next, at 100 yards and she did great. Groups were about 2”, but this was Day 1 in her shooting life, so that was pretty good. I had a lot of reloads, so I just let her shoot till she felt comfortable. Then we got “her” Savage 243, and she immediately started backing away. Said she didn’t want to shoot it. It turned out to be the noise, so I gave her a set of my really good earmuffs. She still was real shy about the gun. I was about to give up, and her dad looked pretty exasperated, but I said I’d give her $5 for ice cream if she’d shoot it 3 times. She jumped on that opportunity. She was to shoot at a 1 1/2 inch square of blue painters tape at 100 yards. I then said I’d give her an extra dollar for each shot in the blue. Man, she got serious right away and put 3 into about an inch.
Gave her the target and asked her to sign and date it. She was pretty happy. Now, let’s see if she can actually shoot a pig or deer.

That is awesome. Sounds like someone can count on some venison and pork soon.

I had a girlfriend that was a great shot, She could out shoot most of my friends. They would laugh about it. Took her deer hunting, elk hunting, antelope hunting....never shot a thing. She could not shoot at an animal with her eyes open...freaked her out.

I volunteered to skin her first deer or hog, so as to ease her into the messy business after the shot. She can observe and learn. This should be fun and interesting.
And then I can tell my youngest grandson (16), who has been lukewarm on hunting, that the little girl across the road shot a deer and “helped me skin it”. Maybe get him fired up.

Lol my wife was new to the outdoors when we started dating. She has shot several deer and hogs now, she brings me beer/coffee when im skinning/gutting pending the weather, and she will debone and trim meat and help make sausage etc, but she doesn't help gut past holding a foot.

That is great! I think girls are inherently steadier or something, I have known several who were really good shots almost instantly.
.243 always seemed like an extra loud freaking round to me for some reason. If you werent doubling up on ear protection (plugs under muffs), I would recommend it. Actually, I do that for all range shooting with rifles anymore. (Now that a lot of my hearing is gone and its too late.)
Definitely encourage her to wear ear muffs for hunting too. (Another thing I failed to do for a long time and paid the price for.) It just takes a second to slip them on when you think you might shoot soon.

There's hope for her, my Daughter used to complain about loud noises when she was a kid, then spent nearly five years as an Army Artillery Officer, she's now a Federal Special Agent (CID).
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype
