I’m reading “With the Old Breed”, by EB Sledge, about the USMC in the island campaign. Quite a book, if you’ve never read it. In the book he was talking about getting introduced to the Ka-Bar by a hand to hand fighting instructor. And I still have a Ka-Bar in my possible bag. Maybe it’s an old Marine thing to own one or to keep one close. I don’t use it as much as I once did for skinning deer, but I never hunt without it. Wouldn’t feel right to leave it at the house. I’ve had one since my Dad’s friend gave me one he brought back from the Pacific in 1945. I passed that one along to my grandson a few years ago.
My old buddy Earl always had his with him when hunting. He was a forward artillery spotter on Saipan in WW2. After a bit of whiskey one night, he mentioned that he had only used his Ka-Bar on a human one time, in a foxhole on Saipan. That was all he wanted to share.

With The Old Breed, Helmet For My Pillow by Robert Leckie and Hell In The Pacific by Jim McEnery (with Bill Sloan) were the three books HBO used to write the mini series The Pacific which was the Pacific War version of Band of Brothers. They all have stories about K-Bars.

This one came back from the pacific. Wife's Uncle gave it to my FIL upon his returnas a boy. He survived Pearl Harbor. Was on the USS Connecticut and USS Arizona at different times during the war. FIL said it was won in a poker game. I don't carry it for obvious reasons. EW Stone Skull Knife
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!
