I have never put an AR together but am thinking I want to put a new barrel in my upper. It now has a 16" and I want to put a 18" in it. Questions are, What tools are needed, any mods needed to the rest of the upper? Any other information I might need to put the 18" barrel in will be appreciated. Thanks

Depending on the gas port location on the barrel, you might need a new gas tube. If reusing the gas block, you have to make sure they are the same diameter. The forearm can be reused if it is a free float.

Either a barrel wrench specific to your barrel nut or an armorer's wrench (mil spec nut), cheater bar, vice, vice block, a set of punches and/or correct bits for gas block.

If ya don't have the vice block, wrench and proper tools it is probably cheaper to buy a barreled upper right now...They have gotten pretty cheap even from the well respected manufacturers. Key is a good vice block, I like the magpul block that locks into the barrel extension for what little I do.

Now I'm not trying to discourage you, I still put some together occasionally! Have an mid length, FF slick side 18" upper I have not shot yet i'd part with if you want to go the easy route...

Thanks Guys, I have not made a decision yet. I want to put a Wilson Combat barrel in the upper and I may just wait till Jan. or Feb to do it, something to do to prevent cabin fever. That will give me time to gather more info about the job. I do have another question, how much difference would the job be if I stayed with a 16" barrel instead of going up to a 18"? Not talking about cost just the possibility of adding complications. Thanks

You'll need to check headspace. In all the AR's I've put together, I've only found one that didn't meet the specifications, but it could have been disastrous had I not checked it.
