OP, are you on a place that can only take a certain aged deer? If so, I don't think anyone would fault you for taking this deer thinking he was 5, but if you need the deer to be 6-7 then I think that's pushing it. If you are on a place that can kick you off and confiscate deer if they aren't over 7.5, like another poster said on his trophy place, then you are SOL because I doubt this guy would make that cut.

So, is this just an effort to say "hey look at this fine deer" or are you on a place that requires deer of a certain age for trophy deer?

Currently our management plan for determining shooters is that a buck with 8pts or less can get shot at 4.5
Bucks with more than 8pts have to be at least 5.5
I see this 10 pt as going either way so that is why I wanted yall's opinion. I'm not just trying to show off a nice deer for the heck of it, honestly trying to make an educated age guesstimate.

IMO he is at least 5.5. up

He is a very difficult buck to age from those pics. I would like to the original size and not the cropped ones. Based off of those pics I would call him a 5 yr old and not lower. He has the lanky legs, starting to get squinty eyed, belly line is race horse looking, brisket at or below the elbow joint, forehead, head shape and face of a 5 yr old. The black hair outline in his ears is still more black than it is white( in some areas it is very accurate in 5 or older bucks) and he is not showing he knobby knees of older bucks. Two things I see that are showing a bit more age are the really stained hocks for this time of the year and the brisket look in front of his shoulders. The brisket could just be fat since he is in great shape and staring to loose his summer coat. The stained hocks might just be the angle he is standing also. Neither one of those would make me call him older than 5 though based off of these pics. I would shoot him for 5 on my place.

Awesome info, and exactly why I asked. I don’t think anyone would fault you for thinking he is 5.5. If your management plan was for older deer then I would be more worried, but I think you are safe at 5.5 yo. As several have mentioned, he really has no look of a 3.5 yo buck, so the argument between 4.5-5.5 and 5.5-6.5 can be tough, and if anyone gave you grief about him thinking he really was younger than older then they need to take a chill pill and relax as this stuff isn’t an exact science. Shoot him if you like him, then post up his teeth and surprise us all that he really is a 7.5 yo buck

Thanks for mentioning the things you look at, never thought to look at the ear hair color before!

Because the sag of his nuts match the depth of his brisket, my expert opinion says shoot him if you like him!
