Building a house, someone I trust has told me this is an issue and I believe it especially since other houses being built in the same hood don't look like this. Wanted to get some opinions here. [Linked Image]

I never heard of counter flashing until my fireplace started leaking. Some places have to have it.

Flashing done correctly. Just Google brick flashing to roof.

If you zoom in on the step flashing you can see the 1”+ gaps. With the right wind and rain there could be some penetration.

Was this done by a legal or an illegal bricklayer?

Didn’t know there was a market for illegal brick laying

Legality of the bricker doesn’t matter and the bricker doesn’t do the flashing.

The Construction Manager is legal and does the scheduling, oversight, and payment

I know.. I was being a smartass. The builder would probably know, they didn’t tell me.

Correct. It is the proper theory, just not properly done. Step flashing should be tight to the one next to it, ideally with the correct type of silicone at each lap of the step flashing.
BIL is right, wrong wide and rain could penetrate those gaps.

Looks fine to me except for the step flashing. First, it should have been painted and a sealant used for them to sit flat.

I have siding on the upper half of my house and I have something similar. No leaks here.

Is it functional? I don’t know the answer. Does it look right? Not to my novice eye.

Looks like a gap between the 11th and 12th step flashing.
I would definitely point it out to the project manager, before it comes to calling them to replace all the sheetrock, texture and paint.

It’s been pointed out but naturally gave me the run around.

Well now is the time to talk to your banker and tell them that there will be no more draws on construction until the issue is completed to your satisfaction.

Done properly but VERY sloppy. It could leak in the right conditions. I'd insist the builder get it redone (neatly). I agree with pdr55... no more $$ for the builder until it's fixed. There's no excuse for that sloppy work.

Typical new construction roofing. Cheap azz builders won’t even spend an extra $400 for an architectural shingle.

As long as buyers keep accepting it, they’ll keep pushing it.

what is that brick sitting on? better be a large pc of angle holding it instead of the roof.

that looks like krap and is not right. each step has to have its own pc of flashing, should be a pc of 90* sheetmetal under the shingles that goes up the brick at least 2" then step flashing is done with the shingles, ea. course of shingle should have a step.

that looks like someone caulked a pc. over the step and the steps don't even look right.

if that brick is sitting on the roof you need to see what is under it for support or it will be a huge problem down the road.

Im sure people having a house built get to pick their roofing material. Not the builders fault a higher quality shingle costs more.

You're telling me you are having a home built and you didn't get to decide what roof you wanted? I do not believe that.

If you're builder is giving you flack over that piss poor flashing job, you better start looking elsewhere for other poor work that he's allowing.

I’ve pointed out other things and they have been mostly fixed so far. Had an inspection and they fixed those small issues as well.
