Recently acquired some Contender accessories and barrels. One of the barrels has the original markings for 30 Herret but the lug is stamped 30-30 Win. Not sure what have, anyway to tell? Also is rechambering an option, and what caliber....maybe 300 Blackout? Thanx

Cerrosafe the chamber then you can take measurements to figure out what it is. You can get Cerrosafe from Brownells.

30 Herret is a wildcat designed by Steve Herret for the Contender and TC chambered for it and the 357 Herret. Both those are ade from 30-30 brass shortened quite a bit and shoulder moved back. it would not surprise me in the least for a factory 30 Herret barrel to have a 30-30 extractor on it as they share the sme case head and TCh chambered a lot more 30-30 barrels than 30 Herret barrels.
30 Herret is a more effecient round for the Contenders shorter barrels and s good deer cartridge in it. It will be a reloading only cartridge and brass is a pain to make but lasts quite well at pressures of the 30-30 or Herret.
I would stay away from the Federal bras which is quite soft when mking Herret brass, Remington and Winchester worked quite well for the Herret rounds though.
If a 30-30 case will not go in the chamber you know it is not a 30-30 barrel the Herret is that much shorter than a 30-30.
Hope that rambling makes sense

I believe the 30/30 has more taper than the 30 Herrett. Rechamber would leave a step, tiny one. It could be a 30/30 AI and clean up old chamber.

kmon1 covered the difference between 30 Herret and 30-30. As he said, the easiest way to check is to try to put a piece of 30-30 brass into the chamber. If it fits, then it is most likely a TC Factory 30 Herret barrel that was rechambered for 30-30.
As for re-chambering, unless you are going to go to 30-30 AI, it will require the lug to be removed, the barrel cut at the chamber end, a new chamber cut, the lug welded back on, and if you are going to a rimless cartridge (which the .300 BO is) you will need a new extractor. By the time you pay for all of that, you might as well just by a new barrel from Match Grade Machine.
