It has a leak. Find it with soap and water in a bottle like you would a tire. Repair the leak. Pull a vacuum to rid the system of any moisture in the air. Charge with Freon.

Nailed it! I just went out and pulled the cap off the high side shrader valve, and it popped off with pressure and blew the dang little gasket out of the cap and underneath the truck. There shouldn't be any pressure on the cap itself, correct? It didn't keep spewing out refrigerant with the cap off. It just went, "phew!"

No not the shrader valve or no it shouldn't do that? I kinda' figured it shouldn't do that. A plastic screw on cap is not a proper pressure retention system.
