I need to drive these wheel studs out of the wheel hub of my tractor. Some say use a hammer but several told me to get an air hammer. I watched a few YouTube videos and they were mostly using air hammer with chisel attachment. What attachment would I use to drive these bolts out? What is a good brand air hammer? Any other advice is welcomed. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2019/08/full-6789-196493-2f3b53b7_d3fa_494a_b5da_f81a9d6808d3.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2019/08/full-6789-196494-1f25a8d2_ab89_481d_a200_f91fc68bd2dc.png)

I've driven them out with a 3 lb hammer. Really not that difficult.

Replacing them with longer studs to accommodate a larger wheel that I’m putting on this tractor.

Would it be a lot of trouble to pull the axle? Then you could use a hydraulic press to remove the studs.

I've never heard of a press being needed to remove/install wheel studs, but I can't speak to tractors. Put a nut on it and run the nut as far down as you can while leaving some room for the stud to move and give it a whack, You have nothing to lose if your objective is to get it out. Don't hit it without the nut being in place.
To also answer the air hammer question, you need to have a large enough volume of air and pressure to effectively drive it

You can modify a ball joint press to push them out quite easily. Rentals available at auto parts store as well.

I recently drove one out of the rear hub of my truck and found it surprisingly easy after allowing penetrating oil to work on it for about five minutes.
If it appears seized hard, I would suggest using a propane torch to heat the hub around the base of the stud, then take a piece of ice to quickly cool the stud before hitting it with a hammer. Apply the ice about half way up the stud so it cools much faster than the hub. You might be surprised at how easily it breaks lose with just a solid hit with a hammer.
Also, because I knew the old stud was bad on my truck, I didn't put a bolt on it because I wanted the most solid hit when removing it.
Of course apply never seize grease before inserting and aligning the new one. Not sure if most folks do it this way but I just put the wheel back on and used normal tightening of the stud bolt to pull the new stud into the hub, again making sure it was properly aligned.

Pull that axle and get it to a machine shop. Let them R&R the studs.
For you to do this, you need to secure the axle with the end on a wood block resting on a concrete floor. Then you need lug nuts screwed all the way down, a big hammer and a rosebud torch.
Do not tear up your differential hammering on the axle while installed.
Good luck.

Put a piece of heavy iron behind it next to the stud when you knock the hell out of it.

run the nut to flush and wack it with a 3 or 5# hammer, shouldn't take more than a few solid hits.

For what it's worth, a mixture of transmission fluid and acetone has been found unbeatable for helping break loose rusted nuts and bolts.

Where are you located? If you don’t want to use a regular hammer I’ve got a snappy air hammer you could use.

Be sure to update us later on how it went and the method used. I'm sure there are others here like myself who greatly value lessons learned from others.
