I'm down to one mismatched set comprised of Scott dog boots and Jims Dog boots for my Vizsla Dash and will be doing a lot of hunting in grass bur and cholla country so was looking at options for the coming season. I liked the Jims, but Jims Dog Boots is no more. The Scott boots are very round and don't fit as well as the old Jims did, but work. Anyone tried the dogbooties.com 1000 denier boots? I want lots of extras and the price is right at only $3 a boot.

I have used several brands and of what's out there right now Scott's is probably the one I would buy if I had to buy boots. For several reasons, I prefer to make my dog boots using bicycle inner tubes if I have to use them at all.

Yes the dog booties .com boots are good for the price. I use duct tape over the velcro and a piece at the bottom too so it wears the tape out first to give a little more life.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Was thinking about trying to line the inside of a pair with rubber from inner tubes.

I have seen reference to people using a couple coats of plasti dip on the bottom of the boots to give them some more life. I might try it.

Lewis boots have their place but they are way to much trouble for just grass burrs. I have 3 or four sets now and they get used the least.

when I had a lease on the cage with a lot of spurs, my wife took a pair of scott's boots cut a pattern with a long tongue on back and front for duct tape instead of velcro and made me boots on her sewing machine from canvas.

I bought a bunch of Lewis boots because they got good reviews and it was a poor choice for me and my dogs. I've had dogs that had good feet slip a pad while booted with Lewis boots on the second or third day of a trip. These were dogs that never failed to make an entire hunt so I'm done with Lewis.

I have had the best luck with 2.5" motorcycle tubes on my brittany. I found a video on youtube on how to make them and haven't turned back. I normally just do the front paws.

Store bought-Lewis are top shelf. They are tough but also pricey. Hunting multiple days I have had them rub the top of the toes raw though.
My favorite are homemade out of motorcycle inner tubes. I put them on with duct tape. Not as tough as the Lewis but they are inexpensive and easy to make. They stay on the dog pretty well. They work well for grass burrs and rock. The open toe is easier on the dogs feet. They do not stop prickly pear but I don't think any dog boot does.

Used motorcycle inter-tubes for years, until I was introduced to Lewis boots. I will not use anything else now. It is under 5 minutes to boot the dogs and the protection is second to none for cactus and rocks.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

Years back, we started making our own boots with 1000 denier similar to the dogbooties.com style. Ours are 2 ply though. In between the two layers of Cordura we sandwich a piece of inner tube. We’ve also made them with a piece of leather inserted instead of the inner tube. We coat the bottom pad, top toe area, and the seams with plasti dip.
We started with the dogbooties and they were ok, but we would go through them pretty quickly at times. That’s when the wheels started turning and we decided to make an improved versions for our needs. We had Lewis boots as well, but rarely use them anymore.
Instead of using duct tape to wrap over the Velcro strap, try using some cheap electrical tape instead. It does just as good and we find it easier to put on and take off.

I did buy several of the dogbooties.com ones. Very K.I.S.S. boots. Easy and fast to put on. I got the elastic velcro and after a test run I doubt I will need to tape them on short hunts like Dove hunting coming up. Never thought to use electrical tape. I often use medical tape instead of duct tape. I do plan on trying out the plasti dip on some of the boots. At only $3 each I bought several. Just hunting one dog and as seldom as I need the boots, it will be a long time before I wear out or lose all of them.

In my opinion, it all depends on the dog as to how the boots wear. We had one dog that would go through a set in one day even with the Plasti dip. At the same time, another dog would be able to use them several days. The first dog would wear them from the inside out which is why we ultimately came up with the 2 ply with inner tube idea. Tape over the elastic Velco helps keep it from fraying as well as staying on. The elastic Velcro is nice, but it frays much easier than regular Velcro.

[quote=Scoutdog]In my opinion, it all depends on the dog as to how the boots wear. This is very true. I have one female pointer that is really hard to keep booted. Thankfully she is tough enough to take the burrs.

I lost my Lewis dog boots. I only need them a couple of times a year for sand burrs on one farm in W KS. Went to order two pairs and now they have vented and non vented. Which ones do I need?

I helped make these boots in 1952 at a auto shop in Enid Oklahoma. I was 20 yrs old at the time. They have been a time tested boot. Happy hunting.

If you get the dogbooties.com boots, I would double wrap some heavier duty duct tape over the pad area to get some extra life. I have used those types before and the positive is the dogs are less inclined to destroy your taping job when they rest in the box for an hour for their next turn (about half of my dogs really hated the Lewis boots and would take them about 30 minutes per foot to chew them off, my old dog Sadie would have at least three Lewis boots ripped off in an hour), but the negative on the cordura type is you get about 10 miles of running and they starting getting holes and then sand comes into the boot from the holes which is really uncomfortable for the dog. Last time I hunted burr country i did a couple of wraps of duct tape, which helped.

This scares me. My cousin is a vet and one of my bird hunting mentors. Stretchy tape around a leg has to be done very carefully, or you risk reducing or cutting off the blood-flow. My cousin insist its best to just stay away from electrical tape. Even when using something like Vet Wrap, as a cushion under Lewis Boots, you need to be very careful not to stretch it tightly. I stick with cloth first-aid tape and duct tape. It takes a little longer to get off, and leaves a residue on boots, but I like to take the safe route. Wearing gloves on a freezing morning, with a dog that is raring to go, makes things like stretching tape tough.

If you start with a cuff of duct tape sticky side out and position it to the boot comes half way up the tape, you can then cover tape sticky side down, boot is easy to take off, and the dog will almost never throw it
