Diana and I just got back from our safari hunt with Huntershill and Comri Safaris. All I have to say is it surpassed all my expectations! We stayed and hunted at Comri only going to Huntershill for the last day of our trip. Our guide was Richard Bridger. He and his Wife, Sashal, were our hosts and they were not only very professional but they made us feel at home, the whole staff did. Richard had two trackers working with him, Thomas and Dion. They made an outstanding team! When we took this trip we considered it our Safari trip of our lifetime, especially after the incredibly long flight to get there 😂😂😂 but within a couple of days we were actually talking about making another trip out there. The animals, Gemsbok, Sable, Lechwe, Kudu, Impala, Blue Wildebeest and Blesbok were really nice animals! My favorites were the Sable, Gemsbok and Lechwe.
The rifle I took was a Seekins Havak 300 Win Mag topped with a Nightforce ATACR 5-25X56. I took 40 rounds of 200 grain Hornady ELDs. With Nosler brass, Federal Magnum primers, H1000 powder. The rifle and ammo performed flawlessly. 5 of the animals were one shot one kill. The Impala was shot off sticks at 327 yards and the Kudu was shot at 277 yards...both fell where they stood. These were by far the longest shots I’d ever taken at game animals. The Sable only needed two because the bullet splintered after hitting a branch from a bush he was standing behind, yes, they tell you to shoot through bushes etc., and he fell right where he stood and was dying but I needed to put him out of his misery. The only one that actually required two rounds to put him down was the Blesbok. I shot him at 272 yards off sticks and just didn’t get my dope set up right...2 clicks instead of three. Instead of a shoulder shot it hit its leg and it was hanging on by a thread. We had to position ourselves again and the next round put it down where he stood. Overall it was a success and having excellent equipment along with a lot of preparation, shooting hog silhouettes off sticks out to 200 yards and steel out to 600 yards allowed me to approach the shots with confidence.
I’m having Alpine Taxidermy do all the work. I’ve used them for over 15 years and the quality of their work is first class! I will post pics of each animal as they finish them.
