Sorry guys this is not a knife. But I figured that you knife guys are kind of exotic wood specialist and might know what caused this, and if it is worth milling.
I had a 20" hackberry go down it the last storm. The trunk split up pretty good so milling it would have produced little lumber. I noticed as I chopped it up that the trunk had a little spalting, but it had a dark reddish-brown streak (kind of arrowhead shaped in the one picture) that carried through each of the 18" chunks of the trunk. You can also see the splits that were caused by the tree falling. I have milled hundreds of trees and have seen stains caused by fence wire, bullets, nails etc, but I have never seen anything like this. So I am thinking of throwing it on the mill to see what I get.
Is this normal? Can this be used as scales?
Any idea what might have caused this, lightening?

Hard to tell if it's good for scales or not; first of course it has to be milled to see what it looks like inside. If it's good for scales it has to be kiln dried in order to stabilize it. I bought some spalted pecan from a man in Troy Texas. Even after drying it and stabilizing it I had it split real bad.
