will that bolt face work the 22-250? I thought they were closer the same size, 22-250 .38, 224 .33, so I guess I answered my own ?, have been thinking of doing a bolt 224 for my nephew.

I talked to Chad about this last week. We have a bolt face issue. It is larger than a .223 Rem, it is not the same as a 6.8 SPC, it is not the same as a 6.5 Grendel. Doesn't matter, those bolt faces do not exist in a bolt action. Basically a .223 face would have to be milled to a larger face to accept the .224V, and I suspect we run into an extractor problem. So, as far as I'm concerned (and I gathered Chad too) the project is dead.

An old .223 can sure enough make some speed, and brass is damn near free. .22-250 is still an option, a wildcat 22X47 L, .22 Creedmoor, and the old man, 220 Swift are all still very do-able if you want a hot rod .22 cal bolt action.

One more option, for someone feeling froggy, buy a CZ 6.5 Grendel, and have a .224 barrel fit to the action. Then you get to neck down 6.5 Grendel brass to .224, 22 Grendel is what you get.

I have a Savage (22-250) that I special ordered, 1-9 twist, fluted med heavy barrel, the stock has the reinforced (can't remember what you call it) aluminum in it, so its stable, I just put base & burris signature rings on, my situation is not getting any better, so this one needs home, upside down again

Well, I have spoken to several gun smith's about this 224 V build. The 224 V case is almost the same bolt face size as the PPC case is, and is often used for the same action size. The reason the Rem 700 and Tikka rifles won't work well is due to the type of extractor they use with this size of the bolt face. They do not have the right size to reliably extract the 224 V and have known issues with extraction. The action that most shooters build the PPC on (in this case the 224 Valkrie) is the Big Horn action on the TL3 or the SL3 action. They use the AI mags and install an AI spacer kit for the AI Mags. You can also use the Big Horn Origin action, and it's a standard copy of the Rem 700 (like a Stiller) with the interchangeable bolt head. Both Big Horn Actions have the interchangeable bolt head to allow the proper bolt head size for the 224 Valkrie for proper feeding and extraction. That's the easiest way to go for a 224 Valkrie build. I could price it out, but it would be a custom build.

If you have to go that far, you might as well chamber it in something better, and use a common bolt face.

I have a Ruger 77 in 6.8 SPC so that would be an easy conversion if I wanted to do it.

Yes, I had to look it up. Case head diameter for 6.8 SPC as well as .224 Valkyrie is .422"

Magazine length on your rifle is what?

It is 308 win length but it has a spacer. I think I measured it a 2.4".

Mossberg has 2 other models coming out in Valkyrie but I do like the one you posted.

I've been watching all the 224 V bolt guns, and this is the only one that's been in stock for a while now. I don't know anything about the Mossberg bolt guns. I really don't want all the fancy AR style stock and forend, though. I may call Mossberg on the other one's. What I really want is this one:

Yes. Either of those 2 models I'd take. The other AR style one, I'm really not sold on that one. And it's available now.

I wouldn't hate having a 224v for my son (8). It is worth is to get one of those mossbergs or should I just get it in AR? How much is the mossberg?

Since I started this thread, I bought a Valkyrie upper. Plan to take it to the range with Fusion and Hornady factory ammo this weekend. I still think a 224 Valkyrie bolt action is a good idea.

It is a good idea, but you have a bolt face size problem.

Around this bolt face size problem we go right back to really nothing new, for a short action, super efficient case, the .223 Ackley Improved. You have to fire form, or hydro form to get there. And once you do, it will actually do more, with less powder than the .224 Valkyrie. Also, while forming brass it shoots extremely tight. I could probably concur the world with it.

I don't disagree for a build. I'm just talking about factory rifle offerings.

A straight. 223 will drive an 80 gr at +/- 2900 fps depending on barrel length.

Good enough for me.
