I started a project 4 years ago to build a beach house/duck camp on the beach at Matagorda island. Well we got diverted by the tax day flood and Hurricane Harvey. We have finished moving and rebuilding the house and building a new barn, island project is underway. I am starting with a shed first to store equipment. This is going to be a long difficult project but I am going to do it. I will post a few pics in a minute. [Linked Image]

That's awesome! - Never seen a vehicle on a pontoon being towed by a boat. How far was the trip from launch to landing?

Its about 8 miles from the docks to the island. It is wide open deep water. We are 100% dependent on the weather. When we took that shed out there the other day, the news got it wrong. The hurricane had our winds coming from the north. North winds are not good for a load going out there. We were sideways in the ditch in 4 and 5 foot swells. I wasn't worried about that shed, but had I the tractor or the ranger, it would have been canceled. It was rough enough where I handed the helm to a nephew and I went and sat down with some cold water. I was on the verge of spewing!!! The reason I am using the pontoon is the barges down there charge $500 a trip. Plus everything has to be unloaded by hand as fast as you can get it off. With the pontoon I can do it myself. I have a tremendous amount of building materials for the house. I have built pallets and lashed everything I have to pallets. So when it is time for that pallet/s I use the front end loader at the house to lift them onto the pontoon boat. When I get down there I use my old tractor to unload them.

Sounds like youll save quite a bit of coin on the backend by avoiding the barge. Very cool process!

Dear Wal:
As a long-time lurker on here, I am rooting for you. But I was also rooting for you on the redneck two-bedroom one bath mobile home/duck blind. And what happened on that?
Lalo.

Ok, for those of us who don't hunt the middle coast, can you give us a brief explanation of how Matagorda Island works? Is it like Trinity Bay, where people own land and then build camps and get to them by boat? I guess I only know about Matagorda by the Public Hunting book, and I just assumed it was all public.

Lola i thank you for pulling for me. Here you go. I have hunted it a few times. It is not good for coastal hunting as you can't hide it. It was built to hunt rivers and lakes. It vanishes when you park it up under a tree.

So far as the island. Technichally it's an island but it is called Matagorda peninsula. Matagorda island straight douth of Port Oconnor is where the public land is located. The peninsula is east of the public island.

This was the surf 4th of July weekend. The trout were stacked in the surf like fried chicken in a bucket.

LOL I was pooping kittens when I backed that boat into the water the first time with the tractor on it. We had a good idea it would make it but I also thought for sure it was going to flip over in the water immediately. The reason I took the tractor first is it has already been 6 foot under water 3 times already. I can rebuild it blind folded now. Once the tractor went well I pulled the Ranger out there without even looking back.

I was going to ask if you were going to "re-purpose" your pontoons once you got done using it as a barge, but it looks like you've already been there and got that t-shirt.

I was intending on using it for ducks on the coast. It just isn't that practical. The house location is so far from any of the three local towns by boat, there won't be a lot of yahoos. So it would be easier for me to build 6 or 8 blinds and just hunt one that's available, if they are occupied at all.
