I just had an exchanger on a post on the photo forum about eating bullfrogs. I no longer eat them nor could I kill one. I love to hear them croak. I was on a trip to a NSTRA trial near Poth. There were 4 dead hogs, with blowflies on the side of the road. I took a different route home. A neighbor and I stood on my pier and shot turtles. Some didn't die. Never again. Is it just me or do you still do wanting killing?

When I no longer enjoy hunting, killing, and eating my food it’s time to go to sleep permanently

Coyotes and nutria are my main targets, now most of the others get a pass.

Bill, I can see that. In my younger days I could not sleep the night before dove season, or deer season. Now I kinda like the warm bed in the morning. I am not a sleeper by any means, but the deer will be there and the dove will fly.

I do still kill a deer to eat, and dove for the same thing,...just not all about it like I was once before. Still excited, just have more patience.

I can also see me not hunting ever again 20 years from now as well, if I live that long.

Meat in the freezer and I’m usually good. Not into just killing.

Don’t they croak either way?

I still enjoy shooting deer, hogs, dove, etc., but I don't go home pissed if I don't.
I can't remember the last time I killed a frog, but I would do it and not think twice for some frog legs.

As a teenager I killed so many deer that Dad called me “The Mad Butcher”. Not so much any more, but I will limit out this year. Got to feed grandkids. As for other stuff, pigs and coyotes must die. And squirrels, if they are eating my birdseed. Same with coons. And if I catch an armadillo in the flower bed, he’s buzzard bait. Regarding turtles, I subcontract that to the oldest grandson. Years back, I loved using my 220 Swift for shooting turtles off logs. Man, I could make it rain turtle meat.

But, like I said, I’m kinder and gentler now...somewhat.

Bill, all those blowflies on all those dead hogs make a lot of maggots. Maggots make good bait. Do you still kill fish or no?

I never got into shooting turtles. Had a guest at lease once who couldn't stop. Finally yelled at him to stop. Not my thing unless it is for management purposes I guess. But I will shoot to hell out of yotes and piggies!

I later learned that turtles were know as buzzards of the water.

As I get older I do not take the pleasure out of killing I used to. I pretty much keep my lease just to hunt pigs. That I like. I usually take a deer or two, but still have a good amount from last year so I may or may not take a deer this year.

I got into a PM conversation with STXRANCHMAN about the dead hogs with blowflies. He knows that corner well. He agreed that it was against his hunting ethics.

I have no qualms about shooting turtles, frogs, or whatever else

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

When I had the Ranchito, every 2 or 3 years, the main fishing/stock tank would get overrun with turtles. Made catfish and bass food out of them. Never lost a minute of sleep over it.
