A Short story - my wife went to the GC for a rim to rim run - north rim to south rim. 1 day, 22+ miles. 6400" down and 4500" up. She was with 2 other women, both of whom are tri-athletes in their early 40's. My bride is 57. Before any of you naysayers and haters say anything, she is in good shape and was one of the first women to be selected as a Game Warden and can kick most of our butts. She is no rookie to the outdoors. Well she got heat stroke 12 miles in, but fortunately her trek friends had electrolytes and salt tabs, Their SatComm phone went out. Ugh! When I didn't hear from them at 11:30 last night I called GC Park rangers. They were set to send out a search party at dawn. Turns out they found a survival shelter in the park and made it out of the canyon after dawn. Park rangers and EMS met them and hydrated her and got her vitals checked. All is good, but she is very weak, but on her way home. First time in her life she has said to humbled by the danger of the wilderness. If y'all will, please pray for her safe return home and recovery,

Holy smokes! Prayers up. Great reminder for hydration and being 'heat smart'. Glad to hear the story will have a good outcome.

Did a marathon in white sands New Mexico years ago and it was rough. Never even sweat because as fast as I could sweat it dried up. I can see how even someone healthy could have a heat stroke or exhaustion in the desert with this heat. Make sure she understands that once you suffer a heat injury you become more susceptible to another heat injury afterwards. Prayers up.

Thanks Sapper - she knows but is one stubborn woman!

Glad everyone is Ok. I’m big time impressed that they were capable of doing that run, whether or not they actually finished it. There might be something to the thought that one bad heat injury causes a long time susceptibility to another one. I know a woman that happened to, and she was never as good in the heat as before. On the other hand, I passed out cold from heat exhaustion in my teens, and I don’t think there were any long term issues because of it. Some say I had brain damage, but I don’t agree.

Thanks sir - this is one of the toughest 1 day hikes in the states, makes Half Dome look like a cake walk. She was well hydrated before and I had fed her plenty of carbs as well. Sometimes heat can take anybody. This is a trail that most peeps take 2-3 days due to the elevation drop and gain. Just got unusually hot even in the canyon bottom - was supposed to be in the 70's at the river but was near 100* even down there. She was heat smart, hydro pack, cooling towel, etc. - just got her anyway.

603 - i believe you are right on susceptibility for heat. I too have suffered from it. I'll have to reign in my bride when she wants to take the dogs on a run in the heat!

went down with heat stroke a few times and you do become more easily affected, this was back when I was working construction.

if ya have to tie her up to do it you need to make her rest up for a couple of days, let the body recover.

I'm impressed by your wife's love of the active life age be danged. Hope she recovers well and I'll repeat what's already been said she'll never handle heat the same again.

So happy your miss lady is going to be well. Sounds like she suffered heat exhaustion or possibly acute heat exhaustion . A heat stroke or sun stroke is extremely serious. Many never recover from a heat stroke.
Unfortunately I have a lot of knowledge in that area.
