I have a nice combination boat house & dock in front of my house. The whole thing is decked with treated lumber that is about 10 years old. Everything is as solid as a rock. But the sun has taken its toll & the dried boards are cracking some & the wife got a bad splinter the other day.

A neighbor stopped by & we were drinking a little & discussing it. He suggested that I cover over the top of the existing decking with Trex or one of the other plastic deck board brands. The problem with the plastic deck boards are the 5/8" thickness is not recommended to span more than a 16" on beams.Installing over my existing decking would solve that problem. Anybody ever done this or perceive any problems with doing this?

If you put trex over it it will stay moist and rot quicker.

Use the deck paint w/none skid , it works exceptionally well for the $

My builder has a lake house, and he rebuilt his neighbors deck/dock using TREX 2 years ago. He said it’s the worst material he’s ever used for a dock. Stays wet and he’s started mildewing. He rebuilt his with treated lumber and the non-skid paint.

Trex is fine as long as it is away from water all the time.

I would sand it and seal it with your choice of suitable paint or stain. Pull one board and you will see that the underside is not cracked.

Mine dock is around 17 years old, so I just just re-planked mine with 2x8 pressure treated lumber. After a lot of research, looking at neighbors docks who used synthetic material and talking to dock builders, I made the firm decision would not use any of the composite materials.

pressure wash it, let dry well, apply 3-4 coats of cwf clear oil base sealer. good for another 10-15 yrs.
