was their any thing wrong with the ruger tang safety? don't remember hearing any, thinking use for a build.

Heavy trigger. That can be corrected, though.

Years ago had a 77V, in .243, that put five shots under a dime with factory Hornady Frontier ammo. Can’t say what gunsmiths think but that action was smooth as butter. I would think it would make a great build.

I have had a M77 in .308 that is over 35 yrs. old. Works great.

I've got one in 7X57 that I've always wanted to get made into a semi-custom.

Lock time is a little slower than others. Some builders don't like the angled action screw. I think they are great rifles.

Only thing wrong with the old tang safety's was the trigger, I finally got to where I could adjust them to where they shot well but it's best to just replace the trigger. I have several old tang safety's and all but two are running aftermarket triggers. Bed and float, replace the trigger and you had as fine a rifle as was made at the time.

I've always been a big fan of the early Ruger M77 and now the MkII. I had a few stolen about 10 years ago and I'm still cussing about it.
I don't know why you don't see more built into custom rifles. Every man needs at least one custom rifle and I wouldn't shy away from using a Ruger 77 as the base.

I was curious as to what smith's would think about the build, I know most want Remy's, I can't find a remy cheap enough to warrant a build, its either the ruger or savage, I guess?? the trigger is the first thing I change out on most any, except a couple of mfg's, in the past I have found winchester xtr's that were cheap enough, I want wood furniture.

I just used my tang safety 270 m77 for a build and changed it to a 338 Sherman wildcat. Required some work but in the end I feel it was worth it. The factory trigger is not the best but had it reworked and lightened a bit which helped a lot.

My old 220 Swift 77V is a tang safety model. Totally redone by Lex Webernick in the late 80’s. Only things original on the rifle are the action and stock. Terrific shooter. My Dad had a 77 tang safety Ultralight in 270. He loved that rifle. I was going to sight in the scope for him one day, when I realized the trigger was about the worst I had ever felt. So yes, the original trigger wasn’t great, at least on his. The grandson’s 77 tang safety in 308, which I think still has the original trigger, is fine. The diff may be that the grandson takes good care of his rifle, whereas my dad never did. He never cleaned it. When he passed away, I found the stock had a good bit of dried mud on it. He’d just put it away wet. I cleaned it up, bore and exterior, put a Burris FFII 4.5-14 on, loaded up some Sierra 140 gr BTHP over 4064. And shot excellent groups with it, and gave it to Dad’s favorite nephew. That’s more info than you needed, but the point is that all of the tang safety 77s shot great.

I've never owned one, but I've shot a few and really liked them. As others have said, the triggers weren't great, but the rifles are solid and great quality overall. I've always preferred tang safeties on rifles, they're just more comfortable for me. I'm passively looking for a tang safety Ruger in .280 myself.

I like the wood inlays in the boat paddle. Looks good.

Thank you gentlemen. The leather is a way around the "boat paddle" stock. The wood inlays were a standard Ruger option, but I made my own from a Walnut tree off of my property. Just made it more personal. The odd part was that rifle never shot very good until I cut the barrel back to 19". Between floating the barrel and cutting it back it became a tack-driver. Now if I could only find the guys that stole it!!! (they got my little Ruger International at the same time)
I always said that the perfect day deer hunting would be to have a guy pull up near my stand, riding one of the two Honda ATVs I have had stolen with this rifle in the gun rack.
I would be in the front pew at church the next day shouting AMEN!

I have 3 of them .338WM, .243, and .223 love em all.
Had trigger work done to all and have had no issues, good solid guns.
The .338WM is my go to elk gun and also have set up for long range shooting. Using my G7 range finder and other tools I've rang steel out to 1000 yards.
