Wonder if they still have "mobile" shoeshine guys? Guys who would go from beer joint to beer joint shining shoes on the spot.For a fee of course. I recall briefly being an assistant to one of those guys,circa 1966.

It's not rocket science.

The rest of the Flight (fellow recruits) figured it out and I watched them. Same with buffer patrol...And folding cloths and making my bed. These things did not come natural, nor did the drill instructor take much time with it in terms of technique, just outcome. Looking back, I'd have to summize that one or two of the guys knew what they were doing or we would still be doing push-ups.

I learned from watching “old man Bert” at the barber shop here in town. He had a corner with one of those tall chairs on a stand in there. When I was a kid, I would watch him work that rag fast on those shoes, it would be flying around and popping. I don’t recall seeing any of us locals getting our boots shined. I would have my shoes looking good every Sunday for church.

I put down self taught. Although my dad never officially taught me, I easily figured it out from watching him when I was younger and then insisted on doing it myself at a young age.

After 23 years in the military as a NCO, my dad was a good teacher in how to shine your own shoes.

my dad taught me but there was an old black man that worked at the local barber shop that just did shoe/boot shining. I'd watch the dedication he put into every pair anytime I was in there for a hair cut. He put 100% into it every time, I was always fascinated at his effort and the fine details he put into his trade.

My step father a career NCO. By the time I got to basic, I knew how to spit shine my boots, make a bed where the quarter would bounce, and have my "stuff" in order.

There used to be a man in one of the bank buildings that had a shoe shine parlor. He made a living at that business and sent 4 kids to college. The men in the building would drop off pairs of shoes and boots in the morning, and he would have them ready by quitting time.

My dad taught me how to shine my shoes for going to church and other dress up events. USMC drill instructors taught me how to spit shine my shoes and boots.

Only time I ever shined a boot was in the Army bc I had too

I answered Father, but since he was still active in the USN I started having to "shine" my shoes in second grade.
