If you're interested, I have some ground up deer scraps that I use for dog food, it's got lots of blood and would probably be enough for you. I'm just off 377 in Whiskey Flats. I'll PM my phone. Edit: Your PMs are full.

I'd see about trying to put your name on a list for a road kill then you'll have everything you need. Try Game Warden or local police department? Good luck!

Question: For your purposes, is deer blood really any different than cow blood? I thought guys doing blood work just went to butcher shop and got cow blood. Now the matter of the hide or leg--that makes sense to me. And I have no experience. But I would be surprised to learn that a dog adequately trained to track cow blood would have any trouble following a deer blood trail.

you actually dont need blood at all..just the gland on the deer feet..little blood..i have talked with a trainer and the only time he used blood was during the puppy phase to get her going..but i have 3 pkgs of venison that a thfer gave me..going to pick my pup up tomorrow..

I just logged on after a long absence with the same question.
Any other tips you people can give?

Mow what breed did you get?

Garry all you really need is some raw ground venison. When I trained my Beagle I just put about 1/2 pound of ground venison in a sock and tied it closed. I then tied a piece of fishing line to the sock and drug it around before turning her loose to find it. The sock soaks up the blood and leaves a microscopic blood trail for her to follow.

Training a blood dog is about the easiest training I have done! They naturally want to use thier nose.

Once she gets good at trails without distractions take her to a park with lots of other animal scents like other dogs and lay a trail for her. If she stays focused you got the hard part behind you.

Make her trails short at first. As she gets better and learns there is something at the end of the trail then make them longer. I laid one trail for the Beagle in a public park that was 1.2 miles. She was flawless and it's a huge reward to see the training work.

I probably have a few packs of ground venison you can have if you are ever in the area.

Good luck.

Get Dustin to shoot you a pigglett and bring it to you. That's how I trained her on hogs. Piggletts are easy to tie a rope to and drag. No shortage of them either. Lol

Find an exotic ranch close to you and ask if they would allow you to train her on some axis, fallow or sika kills. Processors that do axis or exotic processing can get you some blood and a leg/back hide or two. I have friend that just got two JRT sent over from Africa that are 5 months of age. He put them on an axis doe blood trail last weekend. He said both of them found the doe with no problem and interacted the same around the deer as his older JRT had done in the past.
