I can't see them doing all that by themselves. That's an absolute ton of work, w/primitive tools, in a tough location. Just to fill it with water the way they were would take weeks.

The effort they put in on the video made me tired just watching. That said - a hole that deep would have made a mound of dirt the size of a house.

Considering some of the bunker NVA complexes I saw in Vietnam this is probably true. One had a hospital complex that was under ground, the largest of the bunkers was about a 150 feet long and at least 100 feet wide with about 4 foot of dirt on the top of it. There were a lot of smaller bunkers, from 10 x10 to 20x40. After we secured the area, the Engineer Battalion came in a blew it up with C4, it took them several days to set the charges. There were no roads, no major trails etc., leading to the / The engineers said the enite complex was hand dug. Trees and bamboo were hand cut for the shoring material.
This was supposed to be an NVA Division hospital complex, they were surprised by us in an air assault and most had left in a hurry. We found remnants of uniforms, tools, hospital supplies, and some food supplies. In the 2 day firefight that kept us out of the complex, they were able to remove everything else.
Combat Infantryman, the ultimate hunter where the prey shoots back.
