IMO the problem is not does. The problem is the ranch owner/lease boss not enforcing some common sense rules. If a ranch is going to be managed to improve the herd then everyone must do their part. Members who do not want to mess with shooting a doe or two should not be on the lease period. The easiest and best management tool a ranch has IMO is culling does - common sense - less mouths to feed the more feed left for the rest - result? Bigger bucks

Now if the LB/ranch owner/members do not care about improving the herd then call it what it is - a meat lease

You can't fix stupid

And none of the meat was wasted. Most was donated to Hunters for the Hungry and similar programs.

There was a study done 25 or more years ago that found that hunters did not feel they got their monies worth from a lease unless they saw 7 deer or more per sit. For me if they give me the tags or MLD permits and a survey on the ranch said I needed to kill xxx amount of deer, I made sure those numbers were met. Throwing MLD permits away is lazy and should make you loose the privilege of being in the program. Less does means less mouths on the ranch...it does not mean you will have less fawns born or raised. Lot more upside to using the tags you are allotted.

Getting on a deer lease is a great thing and I also say hard to get on one...at least one I can afford. When as a new member on a lease, I try to get along with all the other hunters...and just have fun..I will follow all rules, state and lease rules. If I think the lease mgr. is capable of running the lease in such a way that improves hunting and the herd he will have my support. I have no complaints, I can live with just about any other rules the lease may have. If however, I cannot live with the rules I can just get off and look for another lease. Simple...the lease manager may want input or even help with surveys and making near and long range plans for herd improvement. One thing for sure...I would add my two cents..I would never argue with magr. or go to the owners. I would fire a hunter, on the spot, for doing that if I were lease mgr.. I found that getting along with everyone is paramount to have fun on a lease. I am old and been on some leases with some great memories and on a lease not so much fun. Killing a great buck is great but not my total goal, having fun is my total goal. If the lease needs some herd improvement, I will add my two cents. If my suggestions isn't received well ...so what. I will not press anyone to follow what I think is right...just suggest. Harvesting does is not easy if a lot of them need to be taken. I would suggest a good deer count would be in order for starters. Give the results to the biologist for suggestions and the necessary permits. Hopefully all hunters will do their part...if not ...then continue to do the best ya can. Still the goal is to have fun and all should participate in that.
