Have not hunted there but it would work well for me. I am non-military so I am not sure if that puts me at the end of some sort of list. Then, with our current situation I'm told there are a lot of shutdowns. I'd only be interested in whitetail.

Hunting can be excellent. PM SapperTitan when he returns from time out, which should be in about 2 more weeks.

Don't know if Ft. Hood allows civilians that are not military connected to hunt there.
I hunted Camp Bullis for years as a DOD civilian worker, and up until Osama came along civilians could hunt there as long as they had a sponsor.
Thanks to him that all ended immediately after those towers came down and our world changed.

There is no list. Civilians can hunt. Basically in a nutshell you have 2 options for deer hunting. Guided and unguided. Fort Hood is broken down into training areas(TA's). (You will be provided a map when you buy Fort Hood area access.) Some are guided. Some are unguided. Guided is just that. A guide for that area will take you out and put you in one of his stands and pick you up later. In unguided areas, you set up your own stand and feeder and hunt it. Like public land hunting. Unguided areas only allow the use of limited range weapons(muzzle loader, shot gun with slugs). There are also Bow only areas. There are deer quotas for regions. Some allow the taking of Does. Some do not. Once a region is shot out, that's it. Since this is a military post, areas will be closed due to training and no hunting will be allowed. There a list that comes out every week showing what areas are open for the week. You will have to make a reservation for the area you want to hunt online using a login that will be provided to you. There are many rules to follow. You can google Fort Hood Sportsmen Center and give them a call to ask any questions you may have.

As to the hunting, it can be pretty good IF you get into the right areas. Generally speaking, the closer to Lake Belton the better. Along the main creeks like Cowhouse and Turnover are also good.
