This 1892-1893 vintage J. Rigby 450/400 3 1/4" BPE just recently left the shop after a rib relay and regulation. It weighs 8lbs 13oz with 28" barrels, and is a non-rebounding Jones underlever model.

I’ve had a few very high end guns in my shop; Boss, Purdey, H&H, Westley Richards, and Woodward to name a few. The quality of this gun surpassed them.

those guns are true works of art. beautiful gun.

would hate to shoot it, gun must kick like a beast.

Harkens back to an era where you had to shoot a chunk of lead that would rival a bowling ball to knock down African game

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Recoil isn’t bad with this one, about like your standard 06’. It’s launching a 300gr bullet of .410” dia. Great medium game caliber. With BP things dont start getting hairy until .577.

Awesome work as usual, Aaron!

I really love those old hammer guns...stalking safeties and all! And yeah, the .450/.400 BPE kinda was the ".30-06" of it's day...a relative small bore!

I have a Rigby 450/400 that is almost identical to the one in the photo. I purchased in Vienna, Austria in the early 1960's.

My rifle has 26" barrels instead of 28" barrels. It weights 7.8 pounds, according to a bathroom scale, but I'm not sure how accurate the reading is. The rifle is not quite as highly engraved as the one in the photo. It has a gold leaf from sight.

"John Rigby & Co. Dublin & London" is engraved on the rib. It doesn't say "72 St. James Street"

"Case 450/400 - Powder 110 Grs" is engraved on the left barrel. "Cannelured Bullet 260 Grs." is engraved on the right barrel.

The number 15960 is on the pistol grip, on the metal in the detachable forestock and also in the wood on the underside of the forestock, so I assume 15960 is the serial number. It is marked Class C on the forestock metal. The number 2083 is on the barrel. My notes say it is a Jones underlever, but I can't recall why I wrote that down. I think it was by comparing it to photo of a Purdey and a photo of a Tolley rifle.

The rifle in the photo has what appears to be a safety behind the left hammer. Mine doesn't have that.

Do you know if my rifle is black powder or smokeless and/or where I can buy ammo for it? I have never fired it and I actually only want some empty cartridges. If you know the owner of this rifle, I would like to talk to him or her and see if they have any additional information. I can send photos.

Thank youmrm1948@gmail.com.

Your rifle will be a black powder gun. Factory loading isn’t available for 450/400 3 1/4”. I do have some ammo for it which is loaded nitro for black, essentially smokeless powder loading which mimics the black powder loading. It’s highly unlikely the gun will regulate with said loads, but it’ll go boom!
