I am going down to South Padre for a week long vacation with my family in July. My dad and I were going to hire a guide to fish for red's and trout. Does anyone know of a good guiding service in that area?

I usually only stick to this forum but I'll give it a try.

You won't have to go far to catch a lot of fish. South Bay and Mexiquita Flats alone will keep you in reds, trout and mangrove snapper all day long, and both are less than a ten minute run from the boat basin on the back side of the island. South Bay will give you a shot at snook, too, but you'll need a poling skiff to get to them.

There are tons of places you can wade or kayak that produce solid numbers. Ask the bait shop, Hard to explain but easy to get to. Last time I went I was kayak fishing and a guide pulled up to fish the same spot I was in with his clients who paid probably 150. and I was there for free. Funny.

I live in McAllen and spend a lot of time at Port Mansfield. You may want to consider booking Roy Lee Evans out of the Port. The trout and redfishing has been absolutely awesome this year. Roy Lee's contact information can be accessed via his website at www.fishportmansfield.com. The Port is about a one hour drive north of South Padre. Roy Lee is a friend of my Nilgai hunting partner, Ferdie Burket. Roy Lee has been guiding out of the Port for many years and is a producer. If you decide to drive to the Port and fish, you will more than likely see some Nilgai in the pastures of the El Sauz and Robert East Ranches that lie on the north side of Hwy.186. If you absolutely have to fish out of SPI, then I would recommend Skipper Mock, only. You can reach him at 956-233-9831 or 956-739-7638. He's more tuned for Reds, and more than likely will take you north to Cullen's, Rattlesnake Bay, or the Gas Wells for some neat sight casting in the clear water. Tell Skipper that Buster Smith said to give him a call. Also...we just fried up some Red Fish filets tonight for supper. Talk about good stuff!
