What is the maximum distance that you would feel comfortable taking a shot at a deer without the aid of optics in an AR county? How about the same when shooting at a nuisance animal such as a hog or coyote?
For myself given the performance of my peepers, 50 and 100 yards. Even though I could easily see a wide-rack buck at 100 yards or more, I can't say I would feel comfortable shooting open sights at that distance at a nice deer.

I hunt in an AR county and am pretty cautious on staying this side of the law, so on deer maybe 100 yards or even less if low light. On pigs and coyotes I really don't have a minimum - if I can reach them and they are not coming closer - POW!

I could not honestly say since I have not shot an open sight rifle in a long time. I hunt in AR county also so depending on cloud cover or low light time, I am not sure I could identify a small buck or doe at 100 yards under those conditions. I would think I could shoot okay to 50 yards with open sights, maybe a bit farther if I had a good rest and practiced at longer ranges.

Depends on the rifle and sights. With my Marlin that still has open sights 75 yards max. With my Little harps wiht the Tang mounted peep, 150 yards. As far as judging if it is legl in an AR County, if I am going to squeeze the trigger on a buck it is no doubt over 13 inches easily.

Deer? Easily 100 yards, maybe farther. Coyote? As long as I have ammo and can still see him, there will be lead going in his direction.

Maybe 100 yards at the most. In my younger days much farther, not anymore.

I won't hunt deer without optics in any county AR or otherwise.
There's only 2 seasons in a year. Deer season and getting ready for deer season.

Wearing bi-focal glasses hard to see all three at the same time rear sight, front sight and animal. A Lot of head bobbing.

Possibly 100 yards but would be real careful judging fro AR restrictions. Err on side of caution.

Have shot pretty recently at 100 yards iron sights. Shot plenty good to hunt with, but wouldn't feel comfortable past that as I don't know the drop of it and really don't care to find out. Like others I would need some form of binoculars to determine exactly what I was shooting at.

In AR county, I would have to have bino's for the judging portion, but for shooting, I am good out to about 125. I do have peep sights on both of my iron sighted hunting rifles. When it comes to pigs or yotes, I will try kentucky windage for as long of a distance as it is safe that I won't hit anything beyond my target.

It’s been too many years since I shot iron sites to comfortably shoot at a deer very far at all. I have pretty good vision to identify a target without optics though.

This for me as well. I just can't see enough detail without binoculars to be sure if it's anywhere close. I could probably shoot a little further with open sights, but not much.

Not very far. I wouldn't attempt to shoot a deer with open sights, although I have when I was younger. Modern scopes make it much easier, obviously.

Years ago I did sort of an experiment. I used a large cardboard box (about the color of a deer) and cut out a life sized deer to which I nailed a 1x2 stake. I paced off 150 yards in tan, knee high grass and stuck the deer target in the ground. Without looking at it I walked back to the hood of my vehicle (where I had a Marlin 336 with open sights.) When I turned around- I couldn't even see the target! Now imagine trying to figure if that target has antlers. Then placing the shot. I have shot a 22 rimfire with open sights at a range, 100 yards, but that is a lot different. I'd say about 70 yards unless the deer is in a totally open area.
