Ruger has come out with a 22 Mag rifle that's supposed to be "Target" quality. I have a few 22 Mags from different manufacturers, and "target quality" doesn't really describe their performance. It's a hard-hitting little round and I've taken bunches of varmints and vermin with it, but good accuracy has never been their long suit. So I ordered one them and just got it yesterday. I put a big scope on it just to give it (and me) the best chance of testing its accuracy, and just got through bore sighting it. I'll be going out this morning and running a few rounds through it at 50 yards. I'll report back. First impressions are good: nice fit and finish; slick bolt action; AccuTrigger is nice; threaded barrel so I can add a suppressor if I want to get really quiet; great overall length for a truck/ATV carry; stainless steel so should be durable. I can hardly wait to see if it will shoot straight. https://www.ruger.com/products/americanRimfireTarget/specSheets/8368.html

Interested to see the results. Out of your other 22 mags which one is the best shooter?

I have an 8360, currently with a vortex diamond back 4-12, have only had it out once but results for me at 50 yrds were 6 shots inside a dime with mini mags. I havent ran it through ammo testing yet, I ordered a different scope for it, waiting to mount it before I proceed further. Off the bat it's the most accurate 22lr rifle I own currently. I expect you should have good results with it. https://ruger.com/products/americanRimfireTarget/specSheets/8360.html

I would bet the hardest part of .22 WMR accuracy is the ammo quality.

Just got back from the range, and I'm quite impressed with this little feller. I put 5 different kinds of ammo through it. Shot 5 shot groups at 50 yards: The Aquila was working so well that I set up a dedicated, different target for it and shot a full mag (9 rounds) into it, after tweaking the scope windage a bit. I got one large hole. So I pushed my luck and shot another 9 rounds; same large hole. One more magazine of 9 rounds, same results: I got these results with a factory set trigger, and did nothing to the rifle but run a bore snake through it before I began shooting to remove factory and shipping trash that might have accumulated in it. I've got lots more ammo to try out, and I will be adjusting the trigger, but I'm telling you that this old boy just ain't capable of improving these results very much!

Just cleaned the new toy and adjusted the trigger down from 3 3/4 pounds to 2 3/4 pounds. Hoping to get out again on Friday and shoot some more, different kinds of ammo through it. Once I figure out the most accurate ammo, I'll put a smaller scope on it put into service on chicken raiders. This big old scope is way too heavy and provides way more magnification than I'll ever need since it's a 50-75 yard rig.

So if you were to do it over again, you would by the Ruger over the Savage?

Since I've only had the Ruger for one day and one range visit, that's a difficult call. If I make the call based strictly on the out-of-box accuracy of the two rifles, I'd have to go with the Ruger. Now, what happens after a few hundred rounds, I don't know. I do know that my Savage has not given me any problems at all over the last several years and many, many rounds of ammo pumped through it by my kids and grandkids. I also like the fact that the Ruger is suppressor ready, and that may influence some people's decision. For me it's a nice to have feature, but not a deal breaker.
