The guy that leases the grass rights on our pasture plants it in the field to the west of us. We see deer traveling through it from the pasture from the north to our pasture south of the field. If the hunters get to noisy and moving around too much during the day, we have seen deer bed down under the shade of the stalks.

Deer at my house love it. They will stand on their back legs and lick it out of my bird feeders.

My understanding is that if you just plant the feed milo it will grow but may not head out. Most seed is a hybrid variety and very expensive (around here anyways).

I plant is for the Ibex and whatever else wants it. It does good as a forage. I don't worry about it seeing out because it gets eaten off before it gets large enough to seed. And if I need to replant it is cheap to do so.

I have planted as you asked and it did not seem to grow well. Could have been other factors such as moisture though. Was not impressed with result, Last year I planted actual milo seed not feed and again really poor result but again moisture was not the best. Will be trying with real seed this year as I had plenty left hoping for better yield this year,

Thanks, planted 3 acres and mixed a bag of iron and clay peas in with the milo. Got a Turkey release here 2 yrs ago so hoping some of it will seed out.

I’m not a fan of it, more of a cover crop to protect legumes until legumes get big enough to handle grazing pressure. Deer has to be hard up to eat Milo, especially mature plants, seems to be a very low preference grain, and stem.

Yes, I've used it as seed. It is cheap, so there is a tendency to use too much of it. Don't plant over 10 pounds to the acre. If the stand is too thick then it will "drought" itself out and make only short, spindly stalks with tiny or no grain heads. It will typically make a somewhat mixed bag of plants since its parent was a hybridized seed. But it will make plenty of grain for birds (if allowed to mature) and the young stalks are good forage for herbivores. The grain has essentially the same attractiveness to deer and hogs as does corn.

Anybody ever plant whole milo like you get at feed store? Yes. It's cheap and easy to grow. Handles heat well too. Deer, turkey and hogs eat the s#$t out of it. It's pretty much our 'go to' for warm weather food plots.
