For the past month (and now into the start of turkey season), pretty much every training range has been closed to hunting and public access, with the exception of a handful of small, cedar-clogged pieces of land along the base's perimeter.

I called and asked their Sportsman's center, and the guy there didn't have much to say about it other than that's the way it has been for a while. Does anybody know the reasons for most Ft Hood areas being closed, and if this is likely to continue through the rest of the season/year? In previous years, on a typical day at least half of their areas would be open to hunting at least until the quotas were filled.

From what I hear, OTC has the west side locked down and will continue to for a while. SF unit has most of the rest locked down. What are you hunting for?

I was hoping to do some turkey hunting there again this year. Any idea of how long the west side will be locked down?

No clue. I'm not sure if they have the whole west side locked out or just the 50s. I'd be prepared to hunt another area if I were you........ Well that's if they ever open any other areas. But the 20's, 30's and 70's have lots of turkey roaming around. I was looking forward to my first turkey this year but my area has been closed since the end of January.

Post has been in essence "locked down" by units requesting land and range control. Untill the hunters get a pro-hunting O-5(Col) or above to hold units, range control, and the hippie [censored] "biologists" hat would rather bird watch than do their jobs, you better look at getting a lease. It gets worse and worse every year. I've given up hunting and fishing
