There was an unwritten rule against discussing your pay with others when I first started my first and only job.

That all changed over the years. We had grade levels and performance appraiisals. It was all printed in what was called a matrix. Do you now have them in the corproate world?

Only my boss, his boss, her boss, myself, and the HR person that deposits my check know what my pay rate is. I prefer to keep it that way. It's really not anyone's business but ours. To be honest, I wish only myself and my boss knew what I made per hour.

Twenty to thirty years ago I used to see places that had charts for the min/middle/max ranges for different salary grades. Sometimes it was out in the open, other times you had to dig around a little to find it. Now, most of that stuff is kept locked up by HR and unless you have people working for you or you are hiring people, you generally don't see the ranges. I also found that most of the salary sharing occurred with the entry level / low level employees. Once you got more experience and move up a little, the salary sharing stuff tended to stop because people had different skills or experience. That or they just got smarter and figured out your not supposed to share that kind of stuff. Direct deposit and electronic payslips probably help because you don't have 10 people all running to the bank together every Friday at lunch to deposit their checks.

On the public sector side, I still think most of the ranges are public knowledge.

Thanks,
Rich

It's my understanding that the compensation of CEOs of all publicly held companies is public knowledge.
