We’re getting started.

Just blasting today. Too dang cold to season on the gas grill. We’ll get these clean and wash/dry them well and wipe them with corn oil to keep the rust down. Wash them again prior to seasoning to get the oil off.

He is still out there blasting away. Finishing up the last dutch oven. He just might be sore tomorrow. It gets you in the lower back.

I do not have the blaster so do the full cleaning the old way. Build a fire and let them sit in the bed oc coals a while then wash well and season

That’s how I did it before the cabinet. It works. There are folks who would scream about the blasting being a bad thing.

Hey Cast, I’m kicking off a seasoning party at my house right now (using Canola oil peep). Here’s the new skillet in the nude.

Cast, let me hear your take on this...

I’m at trade days last year and this dude has some cast iron for sale

I over hear a lady ask the seller if lead has ever been melted in them

The seller just said idk.

But I never thought of that I guess

So a piece that is near 100 years old could have

Is that bad?

If you blast it and reseason, I don’t see how any lead could remain

I didn’t blast my Puritan, it’s most likely a 30-40’s model if I remember correctly

And we’ve used it for prob 2 years

What if you don’t blast them?

I know Cast did but I wouldn’t, I just couldnt wipe the old off like that

In reference to possible lead being used in them. That’s an odd thing to worry about I will admit

I just never heard of that but it did make sense of years ago that being common

I never thought of it

Every piece blasted today...... was abused previously and required sandblasting.... a few I improved the cooking surface on.

What did those super smooth ones end up looking like after you blasted them?

I’ll post pics. I washed them with soap and hot water.... then a light coat of vegetable oil and in the oven at 250 until I have time to season them.

Lead is usually melted in thick walled dutch ovens or purpose built pots. I have a couple of those. The pots used for lead will show it. They look nasty and lead does stick to them. If I had a Griswald dutch oven that showed signs of lead, I’d blast it clean, season it and display it. If someone wanted to buy it, I’d disclose the lead and tell them it’s probably fine to cook in.
