What is the best bait for mound kill and not having to water in. I'm about to try and put a dent in these suckers here at the ranch.

Large area, treat couple dozen up to 100 or so mounds, grazing livestock on property - Amdro Pro.

Need to treat from a few to a couple dozens mounds - Amdro fire ant bait granules or Amdro Ant block granules.
Ant block kills more species of ants including fire ants.

Baits that will get transferred to the queen are always far more effective in long term reduction/control.

An entomologist once told me that to make the baits/poisons more effective use only about 1/4 of the recommended dosage. He said when there's lots of the stuff near the mound, they won't carry it inside. When there's just a little, they carry it inside for storage. Kinda like stocking up on ammo in case a dummycrat gets elected. He also told me that one reason the dosage is so high although less effective is that it makes you buy more. I've tried it and it seems to work. Can't hurt to try.

Ortho Orthene is sold at Walmart, Lowes, TSC, etc. 50% Acephate powder. It does work quickly.

coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. I don't give eeffoc until I have my morning coffee.

Amdro has always worked for me and never results in the queen and surviving ants just relocating somewhere nearby.

I also agree with the earlier post that you need not use near as much as recommended. That big fat queen need only eat off one granule to die bitch die.

The problem in controlling fire ants is neighbors who provide them with sanctuary.

You can get it at Walmart, Lowes, or Home Depot. Another quick fix is wasp and hornet spray. NewGulf recommended that to me. I keep in on my riding mower.

I use the amdro or ortho granules, just a little at a time, coffee can with 4-5 1/4" holes for a shaker.

red ants are some of the best prevention you can have too, they hate fire ants and will not let them anywhere near one of their mounds. I have moved red ants around to start mounds, only need a couple per acre to work.

When I use Orthene, the mounds just move over.

Orthene here too. I like to kick the mound to stir them up then a little shake and watch the white coated ones going back down the hole carrying death to their brothers and sisters.

That's interesting, it says to not disturb mound.

I've been using Bayer in the blue shaker for a few years with good resuts. I dust the mound in the evening and it's dead the next day.

Regular unleaded also works but it will kill your grass.

Diesel works too. Have a large bare spot from a stubborn mound from last year.

I've had best results with Amdro, Get the one that says for fire ant mounds.
I used Orthene in the past and it works, but I had best luck keeping them gone from my property and fewer treatments needed with the Amdro granules.
A little bit around the mound does the trick. You can watch them carrying it back down the hole. Next thing you know, BAM. The mound is not fresh and eventually washes away. With permission, I treated my neighbors yards on both sides also and that helped a lot. That was in city size lots on normal residential neighborhood.
I hate fire ants.
