Not really. I used one of the handwarmer packs- stapled it to the target at 25 yards first. Shot, then moved the POI to where I observed the hole, then shot again. Moved the target to 100 yards, fired, walked down and measured the bullet hole location, then went back to the scope and clicked the reticle over and up to the hole location, shot again, walked down, repeat. Got it where I wanted (1.5" high at 100) in 3x100 yard walks, shot 5 more to confirm. Good to go. Shot this coyote at 165 yards.

It isn’t hard
What is hard is to shoot tiny little groups with thermal such that you’d get with a conventional high magnification optic.
Use foil for a target

Can it be difficult, yes. It certainly is more challenging than a regular scope. The main thing is figuring out what increment (or amount the reticle moves) with each adjustment with each magnification. Each brand of thermal scope is different. My Pulsar unit (XP 38 Trail) was the easiest to sight in. My FLIR unit (RS32) took a little more effort. The Pulsar unit can see foil and any other heat source for sighting in. The FLIR unit I had would not see foil, and you had to use an actual heat source. I used a hand warmer a few times. But I found a beer can or water bottle filled with hot water worked well also. With the Pulsar unit, you could even see the bullet holes in the paper for a few seconds after it passed through the target. Same thing for a steel plate. Impacts on steel are easy to see from the heat of impact. We found a 1.5" washer the easiest to use. Heat it up for a few seconds with a propane torch, and it's good for 10 minutes. Hang it with some baling wire in front of your target and you're GTG.
Groups were ok. I never did shoot tight groups with the FLIR unit. But the Pulsar we could go through the center of a 1.5" washer easy (3/4" hole) with some of the rifles.

Shoot at target move reticle to impact confirm with a 3rd shot and good to go.

Cardboard box, 1" square foil tape in a square, a make a border with electric tape. Punch a small hole in the center of the tape and put a lit cigarette in it. Works amazing.

I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

When it's hot out I use 16oz plastic bottles w/frozen water, I made a target that holds 6 of them horizontally w/the bottom showing and it gives me a 2.5" to hit at 100 yds, I mounted my apex 50 on my 300 blackout and the very first shot it hit right in the center, what are the odds on that happening? The ice really shows up good.

If you have your own range it's even easier.. Get it close using either the hand warmer or aluminum tape trick.. then get a piece of AR500 steel and warm it up if necessary (round works great).. every few shots put a fresh coat of paint on so you can see where the new hits are. quick and easy.
