She is doing well. She is eating and moving as though everything is normal. Gonna be a chore to keep her “down” until she heals.

Update on Izzy..

Izzy has gone back to the surgical center once a week for the last four weeks. Every week they have removed the cast, done a visual inspection and recasted the leg. Yesterday the cast came off for good. The good news is that the x-rays showed everything has remained in place and the bone is looking pretty good. The bad news is that she has developed some pretty bad “pressure sores” on her foot/paw.

There are open sores between her toes causing her foot to swell and weep. Even with pain meds she is hurting pretty bad. We have to clean twice a day with a bleach solution and let air dry. As you can imagine it is pretty tough to do as she isn’t happy about it. There is zero chance of her using the foot or leg at the moment so basically we are keeping her medicated and kenneled. (Well..she gets a lot of lap/couch time too.)

Anyway, I’m sure she will bounce back, just a little miserable at the moment.

Rough math puts us somewhere between $5,000 and $5,500. We have another follow up in four weeks that includes x-rays. That will put us at a firm $5,500.00.

Yeah, it’s insane if you ask me but the price was pretty uniform for the DFW area. We got a few different “quotes” and they were all pretty close. A good friend of mine found a surgeon south of here that was a lot cheaper but he was 2.5hrs away. 5hrs round trip, an overnight stay for the surgery, multiple follow ups, days off work, fuel cost, etc..made it illogical to go down south. That’s not including any potential complications or emergencies either. We could have saved a lot of money by amputating. One quote we got for amputation was $1,700.00. Despite the huge cost savings, amputation was never a real option for us.

I agree that is a lot of cash on a dog but if I had the money I would spend it on the right dog. Heck we spent $900 on our fat, 10 year old, little beagle this winter when she started pooping blood. Never thought I would be okay with stuff like that but I guess I'm getting soft.
Hope the rest of the healing and recovery goes well.
