I don't know how you guys do it.

We need some part-time help in our office so I thought I'd post the job on indeed. I guess it went live at 8:00 am....we have had 163 applications in the past hour and 15 minutes. This isn't even for a "good" job - just 20-25 hours a week and $15/hr. I can only imagine the amount of applications for full-time decent paying jobs.

I posted an add on ZipRecruiter a couple years ago to hire another assistant. I want to say I had 600 plus resumes in the first few hours. Nightmare!

I bet Indeed uses algorithms to match their applicants with posted jobs and then spams the potential employer with "qualified" candidates....
I would hate to weed through all that.

They have programs that will sort through resumes and look for key words you are looking for like dedicated, hard worker, time management, felon, or what ever trait you are looking for or trying to avoid.

In a nut shell, you get what you pay for along with the liabilities. Just becareful and do your due diligence to limit liability in the interviewing and selection process

Did you try LinkdIn? I’m not sure if it’s any better, but might be a smaller pool of people and might do a better job matching you with the right candidates, not just anybody with an internet connection who is watching sites like Indeed.

Back in the day, a lot of applications I received were just to keep thier benifits going. IMO.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

As a hiring manager, this is a perfect example of something we have discussed on here for years. Proofread your resumes for spelling and grammar. With all the automated systems, new job postings get flooded with crap as soon as they go live. Someone has to weed through the crap as quickly as possible. When I had postings that went live and had hundreds of responses, the first thing my HR rep would do is toss any with glaring spelling/grammar errors. She then went through and tossed any that weren't local. That would normally take a list from a couple hundred down to 20 or so. I would then take a quick pass at the remainders and get the list down to the 5-8 we would look at in more detail. I'd pass those to the guys on my team to get their thoughts and to see if anyone recognized any of the names or former employers. If we recognized a name as some who had a bad rep, they got tossed. If we saw an employer on the resume where we knew someone at the company, we'd give them a quick call and ask if they knew the person. Eventually we would narrow a 200 person list down to 3 or 4 and we'd bring them in to talk. However, it all starts with the first giant weed-out and almost every-time, that was based on spelling/grammar/location.

I'm going to guess that 80-85% of these were just that.

Got a lot of that. Especially from people that claim to have degrees.

We are a small O&G firm - it is just me and our accountant. I have now wasted almost half a day to take 220 applicants down to 2 worth contacting.

For a little while I was part of the team that hired our 9-1-1 call takers and dispatchers. We would post the opening with the intention of hiring as many as possible. Sounds easy right? Within a 2 week period, we generally would receive around 1000 applicants. Those applicant would take an apptitude test and get cut in half. Those 500 would submit an electronic resume and the system would find key words or phrases and reject them, now down to around 250. Those would have to submit a background check, drug test, and polygraph, we would have about 50 continue at this point, and those that did about 20-25 passed the initial background and moved to in-person interviews. Once we interviewed and selected the ones we liked, they had to wait for a full back ground check. Mind you, this is a full time job, bad hours and days off, starting pay was $16.80 an hour with tons of overtime, full benefits and retirement. Not exactly everybody’s dream job. From start to finish, 3-4 months have passed. Most hav expound other jobs during that time. Out of 1000 initial applicants we would be very lucky if we hired 5, 1-2 was normal.
