I just picked up a diamondback 308 and wanted to get some opinions on the best optic to use? I will be using this for deer and hog hunting. Anywhere from 50 to 300 yards out. What are your thoughts?

I have a vortex viper FFP 2.5X10 and I love it. The 2.5 allows me to shoot quick shots with both eyes open and the 10X is plenty out past 300 yards. I know a lot of people hate vortex, but I have 3 and no issues with any of them.

There's many excellent options from Hawke, Athlon, Meopta, Burris etc. I would suggest a 2.2.5 - 6/10 power. Please feel free to give us a call (speak with either me or Neil) and we can discuss what would be best for you Have a great day Doug

I've shot it to 800 yards with no problem. It or the Viper 2.5-10x44 would be a solid option. The Leupold VX-R line with the Firedot would be another I would recommend.

#1 comment I have...What is your budget? It varies widely depending on how much you'd like to spend and you'll get the best feedback if you define budget.
Me personally, the price level would help dictate what to get. If I were trying to save funds and only get something to "get the job done," i.e. roughly $250 or less, then I'd just get something like a Vortex or Nikon in whatever magnification with glass clarity and objective size as my two main criteria. So something like a 3-9x50 possibly with AO and I wouldn't care the reticle at the ranges you're talking about.
I am in a similar situation that I want one scope for a 6.5g and 308 AR10. So i recently got a 2.5-10x56 trijicon accupower. Haven't shot it yet but looks like it will fit the bill. The large size doesn't bother me and it's likghter than it looks.
HOWEVER, if you had a heftier budget, something like the trijicon 1-8 accupower is what i really wanted but couldn't quite get myself to pay for it.

I would say 300 or less but historically my budget increases by 200 when I start shopping around. Thanks for the feedback.

I've heard these are great too. Because Primary is in Houston (pearland), I often see in their store front some refurbed ones for like 700 or less. It was very tempting. Also read somewhere that the aforementioned trijicon comparable share many of the key parts hard from the same Japanese factory. Basically, everything that's not the turrets themselves, the reticles (including illumination) and the housings. The glass, erectors, etc are the same.

Burris XTR II 2-10X or 3-15X is what I am probably going to put on my AR-10. If you can find a used one, you'll get a while lot of scope for the money! And 10 feet to 500 yards is no problem. (I know you said 300)

another dumb question. just about everyone has recommended a 2.5 X rather than a 3X. Can you tell me why that is?

another dumb question. just about everyone has recommended a 2.5 X rather than a 3X. Can you tell me why that is? I think it usually has alot more to do with market availability and manufacturing than shear preference between the magnification difference, if you assume they have all been calibrated properly. You'll notice that 3x's tend to always be up to 9 or 12. Most of the 2.5x are up to 10. So 3-9 is the classic and many companies, broadly speaking, did this because the internals of a scope have a limited range of travel. So other options were only something like 3.5-10 and 4-12 (again a 3x multiplier). So the lenses used dictate the actual upper and lower bound of the magnification range but the internal mechanism defines the multipilcation factor of the range. So when 4x became much more prominent, 2.5-10x and 4-16x and 6-24. Then the 5x, once again more broadly because higher end luxury good ALWAYS drive innovation at "lower" levels, and now 3-15x, 5-25. Long way of saying, it's easier to sell more things if you have more things to sell AND the market demand has flourished for multiple reason. Also the market has grown substantially and seemingly exponentially. Feels like the optics options since I bought my first one in 2008 are vastly greater and I remember people back then telling me how options in 2008 vs the 90's a vastly better.

Perfect for my rig.
