Was out shooting turtles this evening and my model 60 flew apart lol. Before anyone asks, the turtles are living in a process pond at work and have to go, they cant live there, I volunteered to exterminate them, not just out randomly killing turtles. But anyway about an hour into the fun the gun flew apart. After I put it back together and left out the mag tube (no allen keys with me to tighten on sight) I proceeded to shoot the last hour operating as a single shot/straight pull bolt gun single loading rounds into the chamber. Went great. My question is , do I lock tight and super tighten the set screw, or drill a dimple for it to set in? Any thoughts?

Isn’t there a screw that secures the tube to the action?

It’s a pin. If your tube came out, your pin is out too or sheered off.

No pin, this is an early-er model 60 glenfield 1971. Completely taken down, only thing that is there is a slight recess to hold the tube

I'm thinking that dimpeling the barrel for the setscrew is going to be the better solution, when the tube is fully loaded its alot of forward pressure on the front sight assembly

Alright, dimple is set. The scratches and such were already there, looks like this has been tightened more than a few times over this rifles life. Before I dimpled it you could see several spots where the set screw had been set really tight then worked loose and wiggled around.

I seem to remember a thread not too long ago where a couple of people got their panties in a wad over it.

I don'ton the most important level, because the American based principles of property rights within legal limits trumps any other objection I might have.

However, a part of me is an old school UT Austin liberal so I generally don't like the idea of shooting turtles But in this instance I'd do it too. Doesn't violate my first principle listed above and there is an actual practical reason, not excuse, at hand here.

Growing up we always took a .22 along to pop turtles when fishing. Part of it was just for fun, part was Dad said they scared the fish off. Turtles generally get a pass these days as I don't shoot much just to shoot it anymore - once in a while though I will pop one for the heck of it. To each his own, they're just turtles.

Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

As a kid my Dad managed our catfish pond. He told me and brothers to shoot the turtles as they compete with and eat fish. I wonder if those who get their panties waded up about it feel the same way about coyotes, & hogs for that matter?

I simply choose to not care what others think for the most part, especially those with panties waded up into their cracks on an internet forum. I shoot turtles.

Turtles eat fish. If I had a pond I would exterminate them. Simple as that.

Here at work the turtles are clogging up the works on one of our processes. They get into the piping and grates and get hung up and die, then the system gets backed up. They are going to die either way, would just rather it be controlled than getting called out for a clog at 2 am

I've heard tell that turtles make a fine soup.

Cant eat these, the water or "fluid" they are inhabiting is non-potable , you would likely get very I'll or die if you drank a small cup

I had turtle one time. Dad cleaned a big soft shell, Mom fried it. It tasted about like you'd expect a turtle to taste - not very good. Doubt I'll ever try it again.

Haha touche. I assume that's what you're sorry about.

I guess for me the only kind of morally objectionable shooting of turtle is for shear sport and/or pleasure. OP, totally get. Garyrapp, I had no clue if that is true about the catfish so now there's a legit reason again. The worst part is I have shot turtles at long distance purely for sport. Lucky for them I'm a terrible shot so usually more survive than fall victim. There's alot of self loathing and guilt each time after doing it. I was fortunate enough to have the cool support of my friend Mr. Lite, first name Miller, to comfort me afterwards. Sad story, I was really bummed I missed that many.
