I wouldnt go that far. The 5.3 is a dam good engine and can easily see 200k miles with basic maintenance. It produces good power for its size. The problem is the transmission bolted to it. I drove a 5.3 backed by a 4L60E and it pulled like a tank in every gear, fast forward 15 years and its now an 8-speed with more power and it just feels gutless.

170sh-k(think that it might have been 180s regardless less then 200k) and it blew. Have 95k on new crate...

Its an underpowered dog 05 version and its crate replacement and 15 version

Nothing new and its not going away anytime soon. What do they call it, torque management? It is a safety feature manufacturers use to protect the transmission.

I read somewhere where the heavy duty trucks, or at least I think ram diesels are governed on power output until 3rd or 4th gear etc.

Yeah its something like that. Ive honestly never thought mine needed more power. There is a fix for that system, but its expensive. New toruque converted, $1600-$2000 and electric tuning will get rid of that.

I know 1st and 2nd are pretty low and it bumps through them pretty quick, 3-5 pulls damn hard, 6th just relies on boost and almost never downshifts . My 2008 power stroke loved boost, often reading 25-30 psi, it also loved to kick out of OD and twist to 3500rpms, this Ram, not so much.

GM also uses gear ratios from 3.08 to 4.10, which can be the difference between tolerable and turd. I borrowed a buddy's 5.3/3.08 truck and couldn't give it back fast enough. Was built for highway mileage, but couldn't get out of it's own way without dropping a gear or two to do it, thus eliminating the mileage gains.

Couple that with their oppressive torque management, and the prolific problems of the displacement on demand, and you had a better than 50/50 chance of being disappointed.

I don't know how I have pulled my boat to every corner of the state. Heck I've pulled my 8,500 pound camper to quite a few lakes. All with an 05 Chevy 5.3. Even made it to work today with 383,000 miles on it.

If you saw how we treated our pound puppies (pound vehicles used for undercover) you would be amazed at how well some vehicles are built. The night we were shot at, I put my 2003 Yukon through a beating. It was literally driven through 6 foot tall shrubs, over center medians at speeds in excess of 50mph, brakes were smoking once we caught the guy. All that just to catch a guy that would ultimately get a 2 year prison term.

That Yukon is still being driven today and had over 213,000 miles. Its quick, but doesnt have the [censored] behind it that my 2004 Escalade with the 6.0 did, another pound puppy. We dont do oil changes, we simply just add oil as needed, never see a drip on the ground either or white smoke.

I own two vehicles with 5.3s one with almost 300k and one with 80k both bought new. There is no way you could talk me into buying another 5.3, even my wife who drives/drove both finally agrees with me.

If I was a rich man, I donate a 6.2 at a min to the cause. Lifes to short to have to drive a 5.3, and I sure dont want you shorting it by driving one of those dinky dog motors!!! Unfortunately for both of us Im not rich.

Well from the sounds of it nobody should ever get a 5.3.... good to know. Unfortunately ill be trading in a diesel so this will be a big change for me regardless of what I get into.

I'd much prefer the 6.2 to the 5.3. I believe the 5.3 is serviceable when not neutered with 3.08 gears, but I would buy countless other power plants before I bought a 5.3.

I have owned 2 5.3's. One an '06 pre active fuel management and one '11 with AFM. My take is the pre AFM is a much better option. The both engines are still going strong, the '06 has 220k miles on it and has been great, the '11 has 90k miles on it and has used a quart of oil per change since the second change using mobile 1.

I was pulling a 6000 pound boat the other day with our new 5.3 Texas Edition 1500 and it was no problem. I hope the results remain consistent.

All this talk about 6.2's so I went and bought another one, this one has the 10 speed trans. Kept the old tires.

Ram needs to put the 392 into the 1500 as an option over the 5.7 engine. The 5.7 isn't weak, but the 392 would be a nice option.

5.3 is as reliable of an engine as they come, but that 6.2 is a bad bitch!!!!

I disagree, they all tick, and AFM on it sucks. They had a major problem from 07-12, I believe, with it. If it starts using oil, it'll be done for eventually, unless you put a new crate motor in it.

Traded in the 2017 with the 8 speed trans to the 2019 with the 10 speed, hell of a difference! Same HP of 420. The 2019 will out run the 2017.

I know my 2011 AFM used a quart or more of oil from the second change on using mobil 1 good filters and changing it at 5,000 miles. It ran like a top but I hated that. My uncle wanted to buy it from me and after I tried to talk him out of it he still did. Its got almost 100k on it now and still uses oil and sill runs like a top though. Although 100k aint saying much for a modern vehicle.

Well I decided on the 6.2 but went with the 2018 since they are offering killer incentives on them. Don't worry 22's will be coming off soon.
