I have a son that just turned 20. He has been away at college. Over Christmas break, his grandparents who are in their 80's, began to have some health problems. My son decided to stay home this semester to be closer to them and help out if he could. He enrolled in a local JUCO. His grandfather was hospitalized and he decided to stay with grandma to make sure she was taken care of. Last week grandpa got to come home, although still somewhat stoved up. He continued to look after the both of them. Grandpa is on the mend and is up and about now. My wife and her two brothers made arrangements to get a professional in their home to assure all their needs are met. My son continued going by morning and evening to check on them and help out where he can. Friday his grandpa called and asked Tyler if he could come by early. When my son got there, both sons were there as well. His two uncles brought out an old Winchester model 1890 pump action takedown .22 short. They told Tyler their dad wanted him to have it. When Tyler went in to thank his grandpa, he explained to Tyler, his grandpa had bought it new in 1893 and eventually gave it to him. Grandpa had used it to shoot squirrels in the Sabine River bottom, under what is now Toledo bend. The old rifle is all original and in pretty good shape. The action is still tight. 24" octagon barrel. My son told me about it all when he got home. He cleaned and polished on it for a couple hours. Then he asked if I had any .22 shorts? I gave him what I had and he went out back and shot a box of shells through it. I just let him be. When he came back in he informed me, it cycled flawlessly and is surprisingly accurate. Also told me he wants to go shoot something with it! To put things in perspective, his great great grandpa bought that .22 short 126 years ago. That was three years before the Spanish/American war. Pretty cool old .22!

Definitely something that can never be replaced.

I have heirloom firearms that will go to my kids. But until they invest in a safe to keep them, they'll stay with me.

That truly is awesome!

Last year I passed on to my three sons several firearms I had inherited from my Dad and Father in Law. I wanted them to have them while they are still young enough to enjoy them. (My youngest is almost 34).
