Used to hunt them with a stick and a sack as a kid. Never got one.

Great picture....but I'm a bit confused...went snipe hunting with my older brother and his friends when I was a kid and they caught a whole bag of 'em....but the snipe they caught looked more like this...bit the crap out of me when I reached in the bag....

Nice Pic. We have them here only in the winter months.
Scare the crap out of me every time they take off 'under foot'. They stick to very thick cover here and don't flush until you are literally on top of them. Usually just one, sometimes a pair. They launch straight up about 20' before picking a direction. I can't imagine how anyone successfully hunts them. You'd have to be a pretty quick 'point shooter' and usually there are so many saplings in the way.
I have a nice little Browning Superposed with 26-1/2" barrels (Skeet over Skeet) and it is a killer quail gun, very quick to shoulder and get on target, but I can't hit snipe with it (unless just dumb luck), something about shooting straight up (before they get away) that just doesn't agree with me. And most folks would consider me a pretty fair shot.
