So the wife, and I did the whole DNA thing for Christmas. I haven't got mine back yet, but my wife got hers back yesterday. Apparently the story her mom told her for years wasn't true. It was long thought that she looked asian. Not to me, but to many. Including random asian people. To me she looked hispanic/native american. If she was wrapped in a woven blanket she looked Navajo, and is she wore a Mongolian hat she look like a little Genghis Khan, so I wondered. Well yesterday, we got her results.....she's 49% Chinese from Taiwan. She's a little confused, and off-kilter today, which is understandable, but i think its pretty cool and interesting. My results will probably be pretty boring "typical hispanic" results for the area. I might be 20% Russian, was thought to be German at one point. Stories passed down for years may not be accurate. We'll see when i get my results back.

My BIL's buddy was told he was Scottish all his life, he did the whole kilt thing, a guy who was really proud about it. He did a DNA test only to find out he wasn't Scottish at all.

What company did y'all use?
I wouldn't mind doing it, I've been told I'm Dutch, native American, and there's got to be some Irish somewhere with this red beard and blue eyes.

Ancestry DNA, for the sole reason that they have the largest DNA database. The more data the more accurate the results.

If I had to guess, I would expect these results.

60% Native American
15% Russian or German
15% Spanish
10% bunch of other stuff.

You're cute in that little outfit even though it kinda looks like a dress.

I just logged back in and they have refined some of the results, pretty interesting changes.

Curious, any idea where the 49% chinese came from in her family?

I prefer to let sleeping dogs lie.
Unless there is a medical reason to do it, I am just going to go with the stories my elders have told and enjoy the memories than to have it all be proven false.
I know who and what I am. It has made me who and what I am. And I am happy with that.

The potential to have that changed at this point in my life only serves to question those I have trusted or distrusted my whole life.

Yeah, the more people that do testing the more accurate, results will be.

Did you have any surprises when you first took it?

No, since my mother is 100% Polish, that area of the world was conquered and reconquered over so many times, not a shock they just circled Eastern Europe for that part. My fathers side is a little tricky, that side has German, Czeck and bohunk mixed in there. There was an adoption 4 generations ago that my uncle is working on that part of the ancestry to try and figure out where that child came from.

Her dad wasn't who her mom said. She only saw her alleged dad a couple of times when she was a baby. The good thing is she never had a relationship with him, because this would be really awkward.

I don't think I will ever do it. I think the results would be pretty boring. I know all of my great great grandparents came on a boat from germany. I can only guess im pretty german. One of my uncles was very big into ancestry. I have a couple books that look like encyclopedias that he put together of our lineage.

Always wondered what is the difference between what is now labeled Mexican hispanic and Native American? I understand the Spanish lineage but certainly not all Mexican descendants have Spanish lineage. Even most of the indian tribe maps are now drawn on state and national borders as if the tribes fit into that.

Best as I understand. Mexicans are from Mexico, merely a location. Native Americans are Indians from South, Central, and North America. Some spanish mixed with indians, not all. The small dark Mexicans are probably close to 100% native anerican.

Back to the wife being off kilter. What was she told?

Based on my knowledge of her, I also thought she was asian.
