Hello, does anyone have recommendations for breeders of close working, flushing dogs in Texas or the surrounding states. I'm starting to look for a pup. Ideally within a half day drive of Houston so I could go see the sire and dam. I'm not fixed on a breed yet, so I'd consider a springer, cocker, or Boykin. Labs are not really on my radar at this time. I'm looking for a buddy to hunt primarily woodcock, but also other upland birds and dove, flush a rabbit or two, be good in the house, chase grandkids around, and maybe waterfowl at some point. Not murder my old lady's cats would be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

I'd go Boykin especially if waterfowl is on your radar at some point.

I'm partial to my cockers. I got my male from Jim Vance in Teague TX. I wouldn't part with him. He was a natural from the womb. The female I got from Iowa and she is finally coming around at 2 years old. Buster: Missy: Couch potatoes :

I have hunted with english cockers and I was really impressed. They were also very good dogs and they will fit in your pocket.

Machine, I like springers. Whatever breed you decide on, do your homework and be willing to drive. When you look at how long you will hunt a new dog, a road trip is a small price to pay to get what you want. If I was looking for a flusher to hunt Woodcock, my search would probably start with ruffed grouse hunters up north.

I want to look closer for a number of reasons. First, to visit as many breeders as feasible before deciding. Secondly, my back doesn't let me drive for extended periods without paying for it for weeks after. Making a roadtrip up North isnt feasible in the near future, unfortunately. I appreciate the input, though. Thanks.

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Geoff Sterner has a nice Boykin he recent had bred. Not exact on the due date. If interested shoot him a message. I have a brother in Houston so transporting a dog there for you wouldn't be a problem. http://www.sterndogkennels.com
