Deer season is over and I'm bored. Time for a good ole caliber debate. What the best calibers are for deer hunting has been beat to death. What do y'all think are the worst? My nomination would be the .223. What do you think?

IMO, its not the caliber as much as it is the shooter. Many dont shoot in the off season. Many do not have self control to wait for the best presentation. I've killed deer with 223, just put one in the neck or the snot locker. I killed several axis with a 45 colt rifle loaded with wheel weights. 357 magnum too. I know a guy that has taken the knees out of a couple bucks using a 270. He doesn't shoot unless he is hunting.

My nomination would be the .223. What do you think? I’ll say we get 5 pages on this one... I’ve never lost a deer to a .223 but I’ve lost 1 or 2 to a 30-30. I’m actually going to carry the .223 more next year for deer and I don’t care

Not going to name one or another, but any cartridge the hunter does not shoot well would is a poor choice.

50 bmg would be a poor choice in my opinion It would probably leave a better blood trail than a .223.

Yep, it’s the shooter, not the shell although I have enough sense not to go after elk with my 22-250.

I really don't think that the caliber makes a big difference. To me the most important two factors are placement and penetration.
If you are out in the rain without protection, then raindrops can hit you in critical places like your head and not kill you since they lack penetration to reach vital organs or tissues.
On the other hand if you shoot a deer in the ear with a BMG 50 and bullet passes through then you have penetration without appropriate placement to destroy critical organs or tissues.
Hunters have a moral obligation to place their shot in a killing position that will cause a quick clean kill. Some hunters don't practice enough to be able to accurately place their shot under hunting conditions. Many hunters are recoil shy and flinch pulling their shot off of vital areas.
Other hunters don't use appropriately constructed bullets for the game they are hunting. Often this is where the .223 and the 22-250 gets a bad rap. Some hunters are not knowledgeable enough to realize that a lightly constructed varmint bullet is a poor choice for deer hunting unless placed in highly critical areas like the brain, spine, or heart/lungs.
Also many hunters do not consider the angle which the bullet strikes the deer. At the angle of your shot will the bullet have sufficient penetration to reach the dealer's vital? If the answer to that question is "No", then the hunter should not take the shot. The idea of shooting to cripple an animal so that you can follow up with a second shot is reprehensible.
Luck favors the prepared mind.

Those are fun too. Here is the text to an old article from Petersen's Hunting magazine. It's called The Dirty Dozen worst cartridges for deer...ever. It makes for some interesting reading if you have nothing else to do. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thefreelibrary.com/amp/The%2bDirty%2bDozen%2bworst%2bdeer%2bcalibers%2b...%2bEver!-a0240723127 I think I'll pour myself another whiskey.

Papalote I agree with this and for this reason I say the magnums that are exclusively rifle calibers. Waste a lot of good meat and poor shot placement from never shooting the gun that hurts them.

The vast majority of the wounded and lost deer I dealt with when I was guiding were shot at by big city good ol' boys with a 300 win mag that they never shot enough, except to make up for a lack of ability...cuz it hurt. Just sayin'.
