Been thinking about doing some upgrades to a Rem 700 BDL in .270 that I bought my mother back in 1999. New stock and trigger job.

What's a good replacement stock that would be an easy swap?

This gun has never grouped better than 2" at 100 and I'd bet it's had less than 40 rounds through it. Thinking about doing a good bore cleaning and starting from scratch with a new stock.

Thoughts?

So for a rifle that's primarily used for hunting, I like the Bell and Carlson Medalist stock. They have a full length aluminum bedding block and aren't stupid heavy. If you want something even lighter, they make an Alaskan model that saves a pound or so. And I wouldn't even bother with a trigger job, just get a Timney for it and be done with it. It's a 10 minute job to swap triggers (20 if you've never done one), and you'll have a better and safer trigger than the factory Remington setup.

On the 2 inch grouping, there's a lot of factors that may be causing that.

What's your budget?

A good trigger, and bedding into a better stock will probably make it shoot better. So will top notch ammo. Make sure the scope is locked down to the rifle with good base and rings. Use a scope that will hold zero. You can clean it, but make sure and put 9-12 rounds down it, before you make judgment on how it is really going to shoot. Get it on 100 yard paper, and put 3 rounds down it. Give a cool down, shoot 3 more. Don't adjust the scope. Give it a cool down, shoot three more. After 6 to 9 rounds, you may see it start to tighten up after all the work has been done. If it doesn't, keep shooting. You're getting fouled in, and that usually is what they need after a good cleaning.

Assuming it is a wood stocked rifle.

If you are looking for a new stock just because of the accuracy you may try putting some pillars in it. I have a savage with a wood stock that shot about the same 1.5-2 inches, I put pillars in it and it cut my groups in 1/2. Pillars cost me $15 bucks I think and a little time.

Budget isn't a big deal since this was my mother's gun and I really want my son to take a deer with it soon.

Was wanting to get away from the wood stock if you have any suggestions there?

I like vertical grips. Having said that...

Really light weight, Manners EH-1

Medium weight Manners T-2, McMillan A-3

I am taking notice of a Stocky Stocks house brand carbon stock, though. Looks pretty good.

Would bedding the "lug" (not sure if this is proper lingo) be needed for any of the above mentioned? I've seen a few videos where it "traps" the lug within the stock.

I'm late to the party, but I'm going to agree with the good Doc here. I love my Game Scout McSwirly more than any other hunting stock I own. It's perfect as far as I'm concerned.

McMillan or bell&carlson. Get the rifle pillar bedded afterward if needed. I’d replace your scope rings and bases, maybe a new scope.

Two more I would throw in the mix beside M and M would be AG composites or Grayboe. I would choose these long before a b and c

I would take it one step at a time, first the trigger only because factory Remmy triggers lack adjustment and consistency IMO. Install a trigger you can adjust down to <=2lbs, shoot it a lot to confirm what the rifle is capable of and go from there. Jumping to solutions (stock replacement) without understanding the real problem can get expensive really quick!

Went with one of the Bell & Carlson's for a sporter barrel as I'm finding a good percentage of higher end stocks are designed for heavier contour barrels.

I've got another mid 70's Remington 700 in 30.06 that I'll be doing next and could go a different direction depending on the .270 results. I'll give an update on the .270 in a few months once the trigger, stock, hand loads, and some range sessions are complete. Thanks again for all the input

I think you made a wise decision the B & C stok is $271 and the Timney trigger is $140 (MSRP) when done you will have a great rifle, Then, as mentioned if you need or want deal with the Bases, Rings and Scope. I had a new CDL awhile back that had a cracked stock that had the same issues. That made it shoot much "GOODER".

If you decide to sell the old stock off the gun. I'd be interested. Also check out Boyd's gun stocks you can customize it how you want it.
