180 Accubond I know has worked well. A heavy bullet, like a 212 or 220 ELDX would be awesome. Some of the Barnes bullets would be decent for good penetration.

Not saying it cant be done with a cup and core bullet, but I wouldn't go without a partitioned, bonded, or monometal bullet. My first look would be federal premium with a partition second would probably be barnes vortex with a TTSX both on the heavy for caliber end of the spectrum.

Like Chad said 180 Accubond, I would throw in the 180 or 200 Partition, Swift A-Frame or Trophy Bonded. Pretty sure most if not all of those are available in factory ammo. With any of them I would not be orried about the bullet if you gun shoots that load well.

Im sure you already know, but just in case or for others reading, you need to check the sight on the gun with the new ammo.

Federal 180 grain 30-06 worked well for me on wildebeest.

I have shot a few of them, and used 180gr Partitions and 200 Gr Partitions, both worked well.

Thanks! Its my old deer rifle, I believe the last thing I sighted in with was just some 150 grain Core-Lokt. Gonna head East tomorrow to my place to do a bit of shooting (and picking up meat), will stop in Buffalo to grab ammo.

Nosler 180 Accubond should work well. I would use Swift 180 grain Scirocco as well. I have used 150 grain Swift Scirocco II in the 7 STW in the past on nilgai, complete pass throughs and they pile up 50-75 yards. A couple was neck shot and DRT.

I used Barnes TTSX. My guide mentioned that he liked Barnes because there was typically an exit if shot in the crease behind the shoulder

Lol, no, but they can be hard to track, and they don't die quickly. Their skin is very elastic, and will pretty much contract and seal up an entrance hole. If there is no exit, there is no blood trail. Of the ones I have shot, there were no exit wounds.

The first one I killed, I had my 300 RUM, and all the guys down there thought I was way under gunned and wanted me to use their 375 H&H, or 338 Win Mag instead since they hunt them often and knew their guns. I did kill one with my rifle, and it rared up and wilted where it was standing. The guys I was with were dumbfounded, and all were in position to make a backup shot. I kept the rifle on it, and we gave it 30 minutes and went up to it. It was done, but turned its head and looked at us. A quick shot to the back of the head with a 22 mag, and it was all over. They all said I was lucky and they had never seen that happen before, usually they had to put 3-4 shots in them to get them down, and then some when they approached it. The next day I didn't hunt, I just tagged along and enjoyed the cerveza, and it was obvious why they couldn't get one down. They could not hit them in the vitals, mostly gut shots.

I shot one 2 weeks ago with a .300 Win Mag using 180 grain Barnes TTSX’s which was what the guide recommended. Shot was slightly behind the shoulder. Bull went 30 yards and fell over. No pass through. The bullet was lodged on the other side just under the skin.

Another good choice is the Barnes lrx. I used the 175gr loaded by double tap last year in my 300wsm with good results. Got a pass through shoulder shot but he was a smaller bull..250-300lbs. Barnes loads the 190gr lrx for 300win. You will get more expansion than the ttsx but they still retain most their weight. I also shot a big boar broadside right in the shoulder plate just to see how tough the bullet is and had good results..he dropped right there, bullet lodged in opposite side mushroomed nicely but one petal shed off. That boar had a thick shield.

I used 175 gr 7MM Hornady ELDX in 28 Nosler and took a Nilgia bull that field dressed 488lbs. Actually borrowed the rifle from Derrick at Horizon back when the 28 Nosler first came out and that bullet was brand new on the market.
I admit when I hammered him right in the neck shoulder junction at 340 yards and he staggered but did not fall I was surprised. He made it about 50 yards and piled up.

I used a 160 nosler partition with my 7x57. He did not take a step.

I shot my bull right at 240yds quartered to me with my 30-378 pushing a 220gr ELD-X and got a Complete pass thru. Bull bucked and took 10 steps.

I’m going after them again next week and will be packing the exact same setup, as well as my 300WM as a secondary rifle in the event something unfortunate happens to #1. It too will be throwing the ELD-X in 200gr

good grief, I guess I will need a .458 Win Mag with Hornady African ammo.

I really want to hunt them this fall but dont want to build a Nilgai rifle and dont want to borrow someone else rifle.

i think i good 147gr 6.5 Creed would kill a cow nilgai if shot broadside in the right place, isnt the kill zone further forward in the nilgai?

i do have my eye on a 6.5 PRC or .300 PRC for a "big" gun to finish my collection out...........

Worked out ok, about 180 yards, looking right at me. One shot and that was it.
