Pretty cool, and not that uncommon in some areas. Ranch I hunted on in Montana was mostly Winter Range with some elk living there year round. Hunt when it was cold and the snow deep in the larger mountains and there could be streams like that. One year it got cold and lots of snow at the higher elevations. Game Warden told us of the sad tale, he was watching what he estimated as at least 300 elk on their way to the hunting area with a big bull near the front of the line. A poacher went to jail without his elk he shot on the road, yes the big bull near the front of the herd which sent the rest of the elk back the direction they came from. That bull scored in the 370s.

I got into a herd like that in Montana, last week of elk season and I couldn't shoot. Too many elk and impossible to pick out a bull and get a clean shot but it was a spectacular sight and noisy too...they were all talking especially the cows and calves

Biggest herd I have personally seen was in Montana across a canyon on the net property so they were safe from me, figure there were about 100 there. That herd mostly bed in the timber of National forest land in the Big Belt Mountains and go into the Smith River valley to feed at night returning to the forest around daylight. Shot 3 bulls on that ranch as the elk were making their transition. During bow season is is not uncommon to see a line of 50 to 150 head moving from the Big Belts to the river bottom

Very cool to see a herd like that. I didn't personally see it, but saw a recent video in December of a herd even bigger than that near Gunnison, CO where I hunt.

Saw a big herd in New Mexico last year. Just outside Eagle Nest. All cows and calves.
