I wanted to share with everyone that one of my puppies that went to Houston is losing the fight to Sago Palm poisoning and may have only a week or so to live. He is now 9 months old and looks like an emaciated, bloated 5 month old. Probably due to the years I spent in Colorado, I was not aware of this deadly ornamental palm that is very common in Texas and used frequently in landscaping. The owner was also unaware. Though not covered in this article, a veterinarian told me that the seeds can be blown a great distance from the plant. If you are not aware of this plant please read and take appropriate measures.

Sago Palm poisoning

Thanks for the heads up. Just got a pup and my neighbor has got to have at least one hundred of these things in his yard.
We had one in the front yard when we moved in but it was the first thing to go because my wife hates em. Looks like that was a good decision now. Never knew they were poisonous to dogs.

They are highly toxic to dogs. I have them in the front yard, but not in the fenced in backyard where the dogs exercise. When they put out the stalk with seeds once it once a year. I clip it off, and trash it.

Lost my Maggie, an outstanding Spinone at 5 years old to Sago palm 3 years ago. Highly toxic. Seeds don't blow and are the size of figs. and are expelled from large seed pod on top of plant.Really a menace!!!! They are every where in south Texas and have an odor that entices animals to pick up. Be warned as my 75# girl was dead in less than 24 hours. I am still heart broken!!!!!!!!!!! They are poison to people too. All parts of the plant are toxic, but seeds are the worst. The eat it in New Guinea after repeatedly grinding, straining and washing the pith from the stock. It is kind of like tapioca which is also from a plant that can be highly poisonous if not processed. It produces a meal similar to tapioca, a plant that is also poison if not processed properly. If you let the seeds ripen the plant dies like a maguey. If you cut off the stalk while green the plant will survive and eventually produce another.

Sago palm is bad stuff.

A lot of landscape plants are toxic at least to some degree. In vet school we had to do a poisonous plants collection. We went to the local nursery and collected big chunk of our samples.
