What has your experience been if you have used timed protein feeders? I'm looking to get a couple of 600-100 lb timed protein feeders. what has your experience been?

The reason I asked is my lease is two and a half hours from my house. i have a couple of 300Lb protein feeders and they work fine but it's just too far to keep them filled. So I'm looking to feed protein all year mostly and need to keep consumption down and increase/decrease to make it last sayevery quarter year visit or whatever. I'm betting it is cheaper to make fewer trips.

Would it be possible to plant spring and fall foodplots. In sept start your feeders. That small amount of protein want do you much good. About all feeders do if not freechoice is program a few deer to show up when it goes off.

I have an all seasons 600lb timed protein feeder. Zero complaints but I’ve only used it this season. I was in the same boat as you, deer were cleaning me out on my 300 lb protein feeders and couldn’t keep em full.

I've got the 2000lb pro evo timed unit from All Season (usually fill 1k-1.5klbs). I'm about 4.5hrs from the ranch, this allows me to keep protein in it till I can go back. Right now I do one feeding in the morning for 25 seconds, this gives me somewhere around 20lbs of protein fed each day. At this rate I know I can return in ~2 months without worrying the protein has run out.

During peak times (rut and growing season), I can feed up to 30 seconds 6 times per day (which is way more than necessary) and during the season I can turn it down to get more daytime activity. I keep an eye on how many deer hit the feeder and figure I'm feeding around 10-12 deer per day consistently, if each one eats 1.5lbs of protein, as many studies suggest, I'm right in the ballpark of where I need to be. I've fed as much as 30 seconds daily and there was several pounds in the tubes when I went back after a few months and the deer went nocturnal quick. During deer season, I still feed protein, but turn the feed rate down to 15 seconds and mix in 1-2 bags of corn. Feeding at this rate I have way more day time activity.

Feeding timed allows me to feed all year long and know I have a consistent feed supply for the deer. If I fed free choice I have no doubt the feeder would run out between feedings. Also, with the design of the All Seasons feeder I have yet to see a single coon munching on protein.

I use The Hammer and ordered direct. You can control the time and duration of it being open. I have it on 1000lb feeder bought from Krivoman. Key is to have a larger opening from your feeder container/funnel spout so that you get free flow and no clogs. Remember too your protein feeder needs to breath

If you're going to feed protein, your objective should be to maximize it's availability. If you're trying to keep consumption down, then just keep doing what you're doing and let them run out occasionally.

IMHO, timed protein feeders do two things, allows you to tune when feed is available during the season (if you have feed available all night via free choice, don't wonder why they never show during daylight) and keeps you from feeding the ground.

I run a 600lb Lamco Trough and wouldn't go any smaller. Also do not do one without the rain sensor installed. If you have a coon problem, you'll want to work on that with a trough feeder. They use "The Timer" just like many corn feeders, so you can do 6 drops of 30 seconds each. I try to work mine such that there's always some in the trough.

I like the All Seasons, but I believe in their desire to keep it classified as a S&F, they have the feed ports too close to the ground. If you've ever seen deer eat out of one, you'll see what I mean, unless they're little pygmies. The Dr Deer guy who did some Whitetail research said your feed ports should be 40-42" high. Just one researcher's opinion...

The deer are in a very awkward position when eating from the All Season 600 timed protein feeder. Slightly bent down and head completely sideways to access the feed channel.

In my experience the coons don't mess with the straight Lyssy and Echols protein, but they will dig around in it if you mix corn in

The 600lb ASF is a little too short, the 1k and 2k models have the spouts in a better position.
