Anybody quail/pheasant hunt in Cimarron National Grassland? I lived in Texas and never been there. Was wondering if any good?

I hunted it last year. It is a big arid place. Drought had taken its toll on both habitat and bird numbers. Got into both blues and bobs. Sparse cover meant it was tougher than normal to get the blues to hold. 4-5 coveys hunting all day is representative of what we found and coveys were small. The purple ground pear is plentiful and hard on the dogs. Unlike prickly pear, the dogs can't see it before they are in it. It takes a dog with tough feet to deal with for multiple days. Sand burrs were plentiful. Boots are effective for the burrs but not the ground pear. After a few days you will know a lot about the feet of the dogs you bring. In a wet year, when the hatch is good, it can be a fun place.
