I’ve been looking at buying a .300 win mag this week through the holiday sales and while I’ve found a good option, I don’t like the aestics of the American Wilderness Rifle with the web splatter paint stock. I’m looking to spend between $700-900. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I’m open to synthetic stocks since they tend to be more consistently accurate, but I’d think that I would really like wood.

I've got a Savage 111 Long Range Hunter, 24" barrel, 26" with the muzzle brake in 300 WM. It has an adjustable cheek rest and the muzzle brake can be turned off if need be. I've shot with the brake on and off at 500 yds with the same POI. Its a legitimate 1/2 MOA rifle with the right load. Its a little heavy but I like heavy in the Win Mag.

Tikka long action, mag bolt face have a ton of free-bore. And some genius engineer gave them 22" barrels. They can be made to shoot, but you'd better be a knowledgeable hand loader. As bad as I hate to say it, for long action, mag bolt face, a Rem 700 and a replacement trigger is a better option. No trouble finding aftermarket parts for it either.

Look at the browning hells canyon speed for a off the shelf rifle. Best bang for your buck and doesn’t have splatter paint.

I cut my MRC .300 Win Mag to 22” when adding a brake to keep the overall length between 24” - 25”. The velocity only dropped 40 fps, but it is a cream puff to shoot now. The tradeoff was well worth it for a light hunting rifle. For a handloader, the .300 Win Mag can be loaded down to .308/.30-06 level or turned up to full power that should be adequate short of a sasquatch.

I've just got a personal policy of 7 Rem Mag, or larger, is going to have a 26" minimum barrel length. But I'm the guy that'll stuff the biggest high BC hunting bullet it'll hold, and let the speed be what the speed be.

I have two 300 Win Mags. One is a Savage Weather Warrior (FCSS 116) and the other is a Tikka T3X Lite Stainless. They both feel good in the hands and shoulder well, have fairly low felt recoil, and are extremely accurate (0.4-0.5 MOA with off-the-shelf ammunition). Both have 24" barrels.
The Tikka is light; 7.67 pounds loaded including scope. The Savage is right at 9 pounds loaded with scope.
Savage did make some enhancements with the new Storm line. You may want to take a look at them as well as the T3X.

Go with a Tikka, they come with a 24.3 inch barrel. You can’t go wrong for the price. I would clearly stay a way from a Remington the quality is not there.

You can get a Ruger Hawkeye with a walnut stock in 300 win mag for about $700. If this is a hunting rifle, the Ruger has controlled feed, the safest 3 position safety available, scope rings with integral scope mounts, a very good out of the box trigger, and a hammer forged barrel.

After looking through and considering the different options, I do think you are correct about most of the stocks being synthetic these days. Additionally, since I would hope to eventually do some western states hunting (elk, mule deer) with it, I think I need a more lighter and hardy options than a wood stock would offer. I don’t think I want to get a muzzle break, so I don’t know if the Tikka is the best option given that I’ve heard that they kick so much without a muzzle break. All that said, I’ve come back around to considering the American Wilderness Rifle. Before I move forward, does anyone have any personal experience with them? I’ve heard that generally speaking, Remington’s quality isn’t what it used to be, but this gun appears to be everone’s exception to that rule.

My Rem 700 300 win in the factory synthetic stock had a pretty good pop to it and I noticed my groups opened up after 5-6 shots. Put it in a McMillan stock and it's amazing how much difference it made in felt recoil. Now I can shoot as much as I want without groups opening up. Feels like a 30-06 now.

Last year I went on a moose hunt and decided to build my self a "do all travel rifle" - The criteria was …. Good shooting, weather resistant, durable and cost effective - meaning an all around rifle that would be good for any big game deer, elk, moose, ect; that I could hunt with and not be out thousands of dollars if it was stolen or lost by an airline. I ended up getting a second hand Ruger 77 MKII stainless in .300win - it came with the orange color factory laminated wood stock and integral bases and rings + 200 pieces of brass, and a rifle basix trigger already installed - Think I paid $600ish for it I've owned rifles alone that cost thousands of dollars, but the Ruger M77 MKII's that I own shoot GOOD; so I sent my new .300win off to Kampfeld custom and had them spiral flute the barrel, recrown and black cerakote - I then replaced the stock with a Hogue stock and could not be happier, I have a semi custom rifle that stands out and shoots great with both 180gr Hornady BTSP and 200gr Partitions. Looked at some at Cabela’s tonight. Is it just me or are all the synthetic stocks black? I just didn’t know if they came in any other decent colors.

Finally think I found my gun, a Christensen Mesa. Has anyone had any issues with Christensen? Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get one?
