There's a land line in our cabin, shared with the hands next door, that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. (There's no cell service out there. A Verizon customer MIGHT get lucky on a high spot somewhere.) When they're not talking to family in Mexico, which is frequent, and certainly understandable, we're free to use our own phone cards to call. (I think I'm using a phone card I bought in 1999 and haven't had to add minutes to it yet. ) I'm about the only guy that uses it. After 26 years of marriage, I still like hearing her voice, letting her know I'm okay, getting a heads up on anything going on at home, etc. When I traveled for work, I always called home around 10pm and the habit just stuck with us. When the phone is down, I have the inReach thingy that I at least text her. The conversations are never long, just confirmation that we're both alright. I've suffered through macho mini speeches from other guys declaring, by golly, THEY don't have to report in - they're the boss, "She knows not to expect to hear from me," yada, yada. (And in the next breath they ask me to ask my wife to call their wife. Uh, no, you can dial a phone.) Understanding that every marriage/relationship is a little bit different - how often do you check in at home while hunting?

If I have service, I check in once in the morning and once in the evening, and we normally text several times a day.
If its poor service, I try and find a way to check in/text at least once a day.
I've heard those same macho speeches from friends and family over the years, but imo its being a responsible husband to check in on your flock every night and make sure everything is on the up and up.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Depending on signal, I say good morning and good night and if I have an eventful day I call her first. If i know I am going to be without signal for a while I'll call and give an estimate on when I'll get service back. During trips to Alaska we spend several days before we get back into signal range so we try to stick to a float plan so our wives know when to expect the next call and can send an alert if they don't hear back from us. I tell my buddies I'm the boss and we can call my wife to verify.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I will have been married for 43 years in December so I can't remember not being with my Bride. I hunt more than most folks since we do to supplement our income. I hunt in several states, primarily across the Southwest chasing predators for CARNIVORE which puts me in some very remote locations. I try to call my wife whenever I have phone service and not in the heat of battle. I try to call home at least once a day to let them know we are still alive and find out if anything is going on in Menard. Adios, Gary

I found out who won our last presidential election on that land line.

This is pretty much me as well. We talk after each hunt on the way back to camp, especially since our boy hunts with me. He likes hearing Momma's voice and telling little sister about the hunt. Try to talk before bed but she usually falls asleep early and I don't. This is also the only time I take a selfie, so she can see our half covered faces in the early morning sunlight.

My wife has a habit of talking. And talking. ANNNNNNDDD Talking. 'Checking In' could easily result in 20 minutes, and I just saw you 5 hours ago before I left for the ranch. When I'm at the ranch, I maximize my time there and hunting/working/spending time with my dad gets 100% of the focus. If time permits, I'll call, but typically I call FR night to let her know I got there and I text 'I'm on the road' when I get ready to leave Sunday. Longer trips, if I have service, every 2-3 days unless something big happens on either end.

Have always checked it when there was a signal, just the right thing to do. When working out of the country it was cheaper for her to call me when she knew I should be back by the phone. Usually around midnight where I was. Still have my old calling card from back in the day too.

My wife loves sunrises and sunsets....so I snap a pic during each hunt and text it to her whether she's back at camp or at home. Will send pics of anything interesting: arrowhead finds, cool animals, etc. We text throughout the day. I also call her every night to say hello and talk to my kiddo before bedtime. I always have my phone on me, and she is always welcome to call. I like talking to my wife and as a father/husband, I always want to be able to be reached for any reason.

I know a guy that would leave for the ranch for weeks at a time and wouldn't call or check in with anyone. Well next summer when his wife had a Mexican baby he changed his tune.

At least a text. I usually hunt alone and my wife worries. I definitely married up so I've gotta keep her happy.

Check in as soon as I'm back in from the morning hunt, right before I head out for the evening hunt and again when I get back in that evening.....now, I hunt on my in-laws place which they live on, so she's down there whenever I'm down there!

I am not married and hunt alone most of the time on my places so I do not have any one to call or check on. Now when I was hunting mule deer in West Texas, I called to check on my buddies while we were hunting during the day or just to see if they were seeing anything.

I've only been married for three years and we were together for three years prior to marriage. Haven't been hunting without my wife since we met. She loves it and I love having her along.

I normally touch base in the evenings when I come in from hunting. I have a hard time getting service so I would up getting a signal booster in my trailer.

This is my buddy i elk hunt with, if it wasn't for me his wife wouldn't know if he was alive or dead, (he has me text her at least once while we're gone) mind you, we back pack in about 3 miles, and stay for 10 days, nearest town is 45 minutes away by vehicle! Floors me, but to each his own!

It’s a good idea, and I always try to remember. I get the cold shoulder if I don’t remember (which sometimes I do). Always feel bad when I forget, so the shoulder treatment is just a double negative.

For a little while. He ended up getting in some trouble because of it. I'd say it's probably best to check in so no one else is checking in.

Mine takes me to our place, makes sure I have everything I need and then she heads to Ballinger or San Angelo for visiting and shopping. At dark thirty she will show up and we will go to eat, either Miles at the Mexican food place, Rowena at Lowake Steakhouse, or Ballinger at Beef Masters or if she is an expensive date, she stops at Sonic.
